Overboost/fuel Trim Codes (p0234/p1171)

@#$!@#$^%!@$!@#

Well, it boosts clean and doesn't bog now, ran it up to 4500 - 5000RPM and shifted it fine, but it set the same set of codes again, P1171 set and P0234 pending...

Guess the MAF will go in when it arrives, if that doesn't fix it, I really poking screwed up buying this car then...

Uh, the TCV is brand new, and I cleaned the male connector, if you're talking about the electrics?

I'm talking about checking the pin tension on the harness connector. Try to find a similar sized male pin and see if any of the female terminals (harness side) have excessive movement in any direction, and look to see if they are spread apart.

Ah, I gotcha now. I'll try that tonight if I get a chance.

Unlikely cause, but it's easy to check and I have seen it happen before.

In one extreme case I've seen (similar to yours) the vehicle had recurring TCV problems. After multiple TCV's installed w/ no positive results, I went to the wiring diagrams. Turns out the TCV is ground side switched internally in the ECM. After checking resistance through the wires from the TCV to the ECM terminal, no wiring problems were found, and it was determined that the ECM was not providing ground for the circuit. Obviously this fault wasn't allowing the TCV to operate normally, causing overboost codes. Replaced the ECM and no further problems.

Like I said, and extreme case, but if you exhaust ALL other options thoroughly, maybe you will take that into consideration.

Well, I think the overboost is related to fuel/air mix somehow, cause that code isn't setting totally, it's just pending... it's interesting that the MAP sensor replacement cleared most of the problem up, but it's still setting the Long term fuel trim above 20%, which is triggering the P1171.

How exactly have you checked for vacuum leaks?

So the bank 1 fuel trim code still persists?

All the small rubber lines were replaced with new ones just before I bought it and it was smoked tested then. I checked all the end clamps and checked for cracking on the larger intake couplings, can't see or feel anything. It doesn't seem like a vacuum leak, cause it's definately boosting smoother after the MAP replacement than before, the stutter is there still, but much smaller. It's really noticable if you don't shift fast enough... for example, if you are doing 4500 in 2nd, and shift to 3rd slowly, and the RPM drops under 3k, it'll "bog" for a second, then recover and boost smooth again. Before the MAP replacement, you had to let off the gas for 5 seconds to let it recover, then accelerate gently.

I wondering if the MAF is okay at idle, but isn't providing proper data at higher airflow rates... guess I'll find out when the replacement arrives. I did notice the value was at 3g/s when I checked codes again, which is low.

Would a leaking CBV cause this? I did a couple searches, but it seems like a bad CBV just limits how much boost you can get, not cause a stutter like this.

Checked the pin tension for the MAF and MAP - both seem solid, no wiggling that I can feel.

Yeah, I was thinking about that... just not much room behind the engine and the heat shield is in the way. Have to figure out how to get it off.

Best way I've found is a flex head 10mm flex head gear wrench. You'll have it off in minutes. You should be able to go to sears and find this wrench.

i think we are in the same boat Arbelac, im trying to figure out what is the ECM261A problem in my car, i check the leaks, tcv, etc...maf and the problem is there. The only think that im thinking for possible problems is the FPR or the fuel pump. I will connect apressure gauge on the fuel rail to check the pressure....hope to see something there cause its a nightmare this problem.
