Last night... Oil change, changed out my old dipstick that liked to blow out and spew drops of oil everywhere, and changed the seal on my oil cap. If this doesn't solve or eliminate my oil issues, I might be shopping an engine. After Ghost posted the carfax on my turd, I found out the cylinder head is brand new (10k miles ago now), but it was replaced cuz the guy overheated it and warped it. A little concerned the piston rings may have been fried as well. Time will tell, or I could do a leakdown compression test. Right now its using about a quart to ~1200 and I've done the pcv system already and it doesn't leak anywhere obvious that I can see.

With 170k miles on the original turbo, I'll probably have that rebuilt first. Possibly the turbo seals, but it doesn't smoke under WOT, only when I decelerate for a short distance then step on the gas which is a symptom of bad rings.

Do you mind if I ask what you paid for this R?

Just seems like a prime example of how maintenance history is so critical to longevity and a strong predictor of future problems.

$2800

I knew when I bought this car that I wanted to eventually do a manual swap; and I also new I was going to mod it. I wanted one that had a solid, straight body because I plan on keeping this for a while. I knew when I bought it that it was a bad idea to buy one of these w/out maintenance records, I bought it from a guy that bought it at a dealer's auction to flip it. When I test drove it, interior was excellent, it didn't smoke, shifted great, and drove great short of a minor clunk in the front end which I fixed.

Anyhow, at this stage in the game I have $8k into it and I'm not quitting. Another $1k-$1500 for an engine, and probably about an additional ~$400 for what I need to make a cat back to go w/ the DP parts I already have will make this thing perfect. I don't like buying other people's projects because I eventually do all these things anyhow.

Was it a bad buy? Depends on who you are. I knew I was going to funnel money I wouldn't get back into whatever I picked up, so faced w/ paying $5500-$6500 for one that I would've pumped money into anyhow, or buying this POS and knowing I would've eventually done all this anyhow... I'm not really loosing sleep over it. I've always wanted one of these but knew they were total money pits so I avoided them. Thank God, I'm doing pretty well right now so I'm having some fun.

Also, you're absolutely right about that. This is a prime example of why you don't buy a car w/out maintenance records or history if you're just looking for a driver. I'll say this is probably the worst car I've ever bought mechanically, this thing was inches from a junk yard when I picked it up and I didn't have a clue; it was disguised as a semi-decent R.

Yeah, that's why I usually look for low mileage single owner cars, bought from the owner if at all possible, with extensive maintenance records, and pay what they're worth.
