Ever 1/4 it? What 'carbed' Zs were you racing?

Co worker has a 72 240Z, gutted with full roll cage for SCCA. fiberglass ft end. Another co worker had a 260Z he raced in ITS class (SCCA). I worked at an indie shop where the owner prepped and built Mazda's for SCCA.

With that head, throttlebody and header, it would pull to 6500 RPM. Used to die at 4500-4800 if I remember. It sure was fun to drive to work.

So you didn't 1/4 it??

I don't plan on making this one insane fast, if I wanted that I'd put an LS3 in it. I like the nostalgia of the triple Mikuni carbs (which are very different from the dual set up on the 240z), plus they came w/ the car so I don't plan on changing that.

Mainly to go around corners. I often thought of getting a small block to use.

Are the Mikuni's hard to keep synced?

That's nice looking, is it a 2+2?

Mine is turning into a huge project. I parked it 3 years ago because the carbs needed to be tuned or maybe re-jetted, it pulls like crazy under WOT but doesn't idle very well, it dumps gas like crazy when it idles. Pushed it into the garage and got it running on three year old gas using ether. The hydraulic clutch parts were all shot so I ordered the clutch master and slave cylinder, those should be in today. One of the rear wheel cylinders was leaking and got on the shoes which expanded, so getting the drum off was fun. New wheel cylinder and shoes should be in tomorrow.

Once I get it drivable again which will hopefully be this Wed, I'll probably just put the wheels on it and park it. I have a solid Texas body, its a complete car but doesn't run because one of the fuel pumps is bad. I think I'm going to gut that car, put the body on a rotisserie and give a proper restoration. The one in the pics is too far gone, so once I get the body on the Texas car restored I'll take the drive train, suspension, interior, etc out of the one and put it in the other. The gray one's engine is rock solid, plus it has Koni suspension, a 5 speed manual, and a great rear diff. Should make a solid car once its all done.

I did get all the glass cleaned, carb stacks polished, wheels polished, valve cover polished, adjusted valve lash, cleaned all the pine needles, leaves, and crap out of it, bought a pair of new front tires cuz the old ones were dry rotted, etc. Its coming along slowly but surely.

(snip)

Yes, it is a 2+2.

Sounds like you've been pretty damn busy with the grey car! I can't say I'm usually a fan of 4 spoke wheels but those Work's should look really good on the Z all polished up  I bet working on the Z is simple and easy compared to the work you did on your R - carbs vs EFI, RWD vs AWD, etc...

Got any pics of the Texas Z as it sits right now?

They're a nightmare. I got the brakes done last night and took it for a ride. I thought I had the carbs all dialed in, but it still sputters when I'm cruising and give it a little gas, and it has a nasty hesitation when I floor it (unless I pull a 2500rpm hole shot, then it roars). I think one of the carbs might need a total rebuild, but I'm not sure.

For cornering, these cars are a riot. This gray one is like driving a go cart, virtually no suspension and slammed right on the ground.

Its easier to work on mainly because there isn't any mystery w/ no ECU; if it doesn't run right its not a sensor, something's mechanically wrong. I don't have pics of it w/ me, but I can take some tonight. Picture (basically) a solid, straight Texas body w/ fugly wheels, nasty interior, and flat brown paint. I still don't know what I want to do, not sure if I want to invest the time and money into this thing to make it right. I inherited these from my dad years ago. This gray one has always been more of a 'pound on it once or twice a summer just to have some fun' car, rather than something I take any pride in. I parked it 3 years ago because there was so much wrong w/ it (like clutch, tires, brakes, carbs, etc). I like the ratrod style, I might stay that route even if I do the full swap into the brown one. I've always thought it needed the 80s ratbones image airbrushed on the doors in flat black.

I'd stick w/ the gray one but I'm afraid I'll be going 100 somewhere and something will fall off it and I'll crash and die, a crash in this thing would be curtains just cuz there's no bumpers and the bottom is pretty rusty. Floor pans are still there but from being slammed and sitting so low, the front frame rails are pretty much shot from scraping (that, plus the battery is about to fall out on the ground because it's pan/holder is so rusty).

Lots of work, for now I'm just glad I can start it and drive it again. I gave my wife a ride in it last night for the first time (she hates the thing), she doesn't understand any of it

Also, I agree about the 4 spokes, plus they're 14". But, I think it works for this, they polished up well. They're Hayashi Racing 2 pc rims (never heard of them until this car). They're actually super light so I'm guessing he paid a bit for them.

Old smaller rubber bushing was done at 68k, tore through both sides. Larger one was fine though. Maybe I'll manage to find the smaller bushing in silicone.

Where did you buy the bushings from?

Viva and EST have Powerflex bushings that will fit both parts of the tranny mount.

Fixed leaking heater hose

Installed new reverse light switch

Washed outside

Cleaned and Lexoled interior

Don't tell JRL about the Lexol though, he'll lecture you about how that's bad for our seats.

On topic: picked it up with a fresh timing belt, took it straight to tire shop to fix a small noise in the rear end.

Got a small bend in a wheel.
