Question To All The T5m Owners

hi i picked up a 1998 s70 T5M with about 113k earlier this year. My question is how long do your rmp's take to start dropping when you come off the gas and clutch after your accelerating, say with the rmp's around 4500.

when i accelerate briskly up to speed and then gently shift from 3rd to 4th it seems like it takes a long time for the rpm's to start coming down. I don't know if this is the usually reaction or if my car is acting differently. It might be that i'm comparing the rmp response to my old car which was a mid 80's bmw 3 series.

and a side note, when i talked to Raxels about getting rebuilt axles i found out that 1998 T5M's have unique axles that are specific the that year and manual transmission. just thought i'd pass this along because none of the other retailers make note of this, but they apparently built a special set of stronger inner CV joints for this car.

I haven't timed it myself, but I don't remember it to take that long. Maybe a couple of seconds at most. I'll try to pay attention to it when I drive the car in about a couple of hours and let you know.

i sure the delay is not measured in seconds but it seems to hang at the top rmp for enough time for me to look down and realize that it's still there and watch it begin to go down. and considering i usaully notice it after a fairly quick run up when i'm usually paying to more attention to the road it just seems to take awhile.

mine sticks a bit too

read this on volvospeed a while ago:

volvo programmed all T5M ecu's so they wouldnt cut fuel as soon as you take your foot off the gas, causing the rpms to drop slow.

if you want it to drop fast, put an ECU from an auto T5 (same year of course) in there. they have harsh fuel cuts and your rpm will drop quick

when accelerating and shifting at low rpm, like 1500-2000, when you let off the gas and push in the clutch, the engine rpm usually rises a couple hundred rpm, right? i was confused by this at first, but have generally concluded that it is normal. allows you more time to shift while still letting the clutch up just as the engine hits the rpm you want, helping you extend the life of the syncros a smidge.

i just wish it didn't do it for the 1->2 shift

sounds way better in gear

unfortunatley in NYC traffic you only get to do that every once in a while. And I break traction unless I'm in third... so it dosen't get to happen that often, lol. I guess I need to get a LSD.

oh man , just stick it out on the west side. thats when i really get to open things up.

as far as the question in post... my rpms drop faster that the na 5spd's ive had. i would have a tranny specialist or volvo tech look at it quick!!

im going to guess it could be throw out / release bearing related maybe its letting out later than what your telling it to.

lsds are expensive!! how much does one pay?

thanks for everyones input B) makes me feel much better about how the car is shifting.

only 98 T5s cars before the VNI split came with the rmp feature.

after the spilt vovlo replacde it with an enhancde RPM system.

just a thought though, can you swap in a post VIN split ECU instead one for a 1998 AT?

thanks
