How To Check A Control Arm Ball Joint

while i've got my front axles shafts out getting rebuilt i'm wondering about the condition of my control arm ball joints, but i don't know how to check them. I'm driving a 1998 S70 with 113k

i separated my control arm bushings from the car to remove my axle shafts, and i thought i should look into the condition of my ball joints. The question i have is what to look for. The rubber around the ball joint looks good as do the bushings and when i move the ball joint around using the control arms like handle bars the joint moves very easily. I kind of thought that there should be some moderate resistance in the ball joint but i don't really have any idea.

any input would be appreciated.

thanks

It is easier to test them attached with the wheels on. Have the wheels off the ground and try to move the bottom of the wheel back and forth towards the engine. It shouldn't move.

Not very easy to test off the car.

The most accurate way to check for wear is to jack up the front end and let the wheels hang. Put a pry bar or large screwdriver between the spindle and the control arm and apply downward pressure on the ball joint and look for movement. Any movement at all is a sign of wear.
