1999 V70 Nonturbo Wagon Burning Oil And Clicking

Hi all,

I’m new to this site and very impressed so far. I’ve had an 87 240 for years that I’m pretty handy with but my girlfriend just bought a non turbo 1999 V70 with 80k and I need some serious help. I have 2 problems for this post that have me stumped. First problem is she’s burning a lot of oil (like 1quart per 500 miles) but not smoking much. Just a few very mild puffs mostly when cold (I’ve followed her enough to know there isn’t any major smoke). No leaks anywhere (I’m certain of that)Any chance this could just be a clogged flame trap/PCV issue? Records look like it has never been serviced. If so, what’s a good source for a quality complete replacement kit and any speacial tools? Second, in the last few hundred miles she’s developed quite the clicking noise from under the valve cover. It came on fast and has gotten pretty loud. Considering the model (and the first problem), is there anything I should check fist? Also, what is/are the favorite manual(s) for this car and where should I get them? Thanks so much in advance.

Brian

The ticking noise is probably the lifters, which get louder as oil pressure decresses. Are you sure the oil is burning and not leaking? Get under the car and see if there are any leaks, and if so try to locate where they are coming from before you condem anything.

If you suspect it's burning oil, warm the engine up and allow it to idle for 10mins. After the 10mins have passed rev the engine from 3-5k RPM's and see if you get blue smoke from the tailpipe. If so you have leaky valve stem seals.

[The clicking from the valve cover means potential trouble. The oil seals in the pan get old and hard, and when they do, they don't properly seal, and that means that the oil pump starts pumping air, as well as oil. It shows up as bubbles in the oil, and the usual first sign is the lifters starting to make a racket. As the other post said, a lack of oil to the lifters. This may mean that you have a PCV system problem, the oil separator is underneath the intake manifold, and if it is clogged, you will have high crankcase pressure, which can cause oil to be consumed all the time, without leaks.

Solutions:

1. have the oil pan dropped and the oil seals replaced, SOON. AFter a while, the problem only gets worse, and then your rods don't have enough oil, and then you have a several thousand dollar problem.

3. Have the PCV system checked. May just need to be cleaned, or parts replaced. IPD has the parts in their catalog.

This says for the 850 up to 1997, but I think it is the same part for the 850, S/V70, S/V60, S80. I've checked, and the part numbers for the PCV Oil trap and related parts are good up through 2001, which means it fits my 01 S60T5, so it should fit your car, as well. Apparently these parts, or rather some of the part numbers, were changed in 2002.
