96 850 Stalling - Course Of Action

850&S80

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just got 2008 XC90 for the wife, I took over 2001 S80, and handing down the 1996 850 to the kid.

It is an 96 850 NA. 157K miles. Just replaced the little odometer wheel, and all the bulbs in the dash. ABS is coming on every 5 start or so. Just bought a E5 torx socket to pull that and have it rebuilt.

Teaching the kid how to drive on the learners permit and the car is stalling out at intersections. Get every single warning light flashing, a lot of knocking, and after a minute or so the car starts and runs fine.

Now I am afraid to give driving lessons as I am fearful of stalling. It enough stress teaching someone how to drive let alone fear of breaking down at every red light.

Now using the S80 for instruction !! I'd Rather risk the 850 thats for sure given their value.

So from what I have read, sounds like it could be the fuel pump relay or the actual fuel pump.

Some posts say check the codes. Would this throw codes. I would expect the ABS codes since the light has been coming on.

No CEL light.

I just don't want to blindly start putting in a fuel pump and/or relay.

So should the first trip be to the dealer to get the codes read. I need an oil change anyway.

The 850 is just a spare car until the the drivers test is passed, so I can fix at my leisure.

Thanks for the advice.

If you have the dealer change the oil for you, get them to check it out for you.

Other than the stumble/stall, does the car start and run well? Does this happen once per trip or everytime you get to an intersection and let off of the gas? Does it happen when you let off of the gas or when you press the brake? The more detail you can provide the better help you will get.

Could be a vacuum leak, could be a dirty MAF, could be an ignition switch on it's way out. How old/dirty is the air filter? Hard to say without more information.

Here are some more details...

Car has been running great as always for the past 11 years... Saturday was the first time the car let me down and actually it didn't because it started again and got us home.

This has only happened once on Saturday and haven't used the car since. I am teaching highway driving and don't want to stall under those conditions I will start driving it on local trips to see what happens.

Maybe because I am only using it once or twice a week now that could be the issue. Maybe the car is mad at me for replacing HER!

At 140k Timing Belt, tensioner, water pump, and engine drive belt also had cam and crankshaft seals replaced

also at 140k did the complete CPV overhaul with new hoses couplings and clamps -

Note from Dealer said breater system severely restricted. Replaced breather box and seals, cleaned hoses and vacuum nipples as required and replaced hoses as needed.

Assume that is the MAF, I think I recall them telling me they were cleaning that out too.

Replaced the fuel filter at 148k in last March, plus brake fluid flush, rear brake pads and a front-end alignment.

That's it for the past year and half plus some oil changes of course.

Honestly can't say when the airfilter was changed last unless that was done with breather box replacement.

more info would help, my 850 started stalling one night whenever i let off the gas, it just wouldn't idle, at all so the next day i took a look at the throttle body and it was so dirty no wonder, cleaned it up and it ran smooth as ever, so just pop the hose off the throttle body and look in and see what it looks like, no harm cleaning it either one less thing to worry about.

it also sounds like it could be a vacumme leak, or even your idle control valve isnt working properly so that when you take your foot off the gas the throttle body closes like it should but the idle control valve fails to force air into the manifold thus no air gets in and it stalls. i recal when i forgot to plug my maf back in my car threw a code and would stall when i tried to put it in reverse from part. my suggestion check and clean the maf and the throttle body, then check vacume lines, then see if the idle control valve pumps air in the manifold when the throttle body is closed
