Sunroof Problem

So I just finished cleaning the car and was ready to put her away when I decided to operate the sunroof. It opened perfectly but now im having a problem shutting it. First, I found a long metal piece that had come unglued. It looks like it may go at the front edge of the sunroof but im not 100% sure. When I go to close the sunroof it slides to a certain point(approx. 75% closed) and then automatically opens back up. If I let off the switch just before this point and then bump it a few times it will almost close but doesn't lift. Has anyone experienced this before? I plan on tackling it tomorrow and am looking for any insight.

Thanks for looking,

Matt

I just started having sunroof issues myself. It won't slide back, it only pops up, and then it doesn't want to close all the way. I logged on today to search for sunroof probs. Dealer states $150 diagnostic fee that applies to the repair. Is this a diy or not?

Is the metal piece your talking about the wind deflector that pops up when you open the sunroof? Pics? Did you remove the slider that covers the moon roof when cleaning it because when i took mine out to reglue the headliner to the slider i didn't reconnect the four plastic clips correctly and my sunroof did the exact same thing (slid forward like 3/4 and then opened again–just a guess). Volvo repair manuals don't usually recommend diy work on the sunroof, it was a serious pain to get it aligned again and not whistle. I'm actually experience problems now too: popping up is no prob, but when i go to slide it back it makes this awful cracking noise and then goes back at like half speed :( . not sure if it has to do with my repair (i did it back in july and had no problems with it till last night). maybe it's the cold. might try wd-40 or lithium grease in the tracks if they're gritty–i did leave it open one frosty night  . idk if this helps at all but busted sun roofs (especially when they're busted in the open position) really reaaly blow hard

Hmmmmmmmmmm 3 guys with sunroof problems all on the same day..........2 of which are in New England and its the coldest weather yet this year....first real snowfall.

10 to 1 its due to the temp change for those guys.

White Lithium grease.........spray it in any area you can and continue to move the sunroof open and closed while doing so. Make sure it looks to be alligned with the track.

If the CRACKING noise persists try to look in and see what the crack is coming from...

Agreed.

Sprays out in liquid and therefore seaps in any crack liquid can...then firms up to grease.

I can't tell you how many times its fixed "broken" parts. From seatbelts that won't release, to a ridiculous amount of hood releases, and latches etc

Wow, that is quite the coincidence!

I actually was able to identify and solve my problem earlier today. After taking a closer look there were two metal bars that had become unglued from the bottom of the sunroof glass. Im assuming these two pieces allow the cloth cover to slide back together when opening the sunroof(with the cover closed). As a result of the missing bars the cover was on the wrong side of the sunroof, allowing me to close the cover with the sunroof open(which you're not supposed to be able to do).

As the sunroof was trying to shut it was coming in contact with the plastic tabs on the cover and setting off the sensor, causing it to reopen. To solve this I removed the cloth cover(via the four tabs) and slid the cover out. Once I did this the sunroof operated perfectly. I now need to simply reinstall the cover, reattach the two metal bars and I should be set.

Luckily I was able to fix this just in time. Although cold out(21 degrees) there wasn't any precipitation. I came inside, ate lunch, went to the bathroom and came out to an inch of snow, lol.

Pretty sure the tracks are aligned, will check. Cracking noise comes from the front passengers side corner right when it drops down to slide back. Totally freaked me out last night when i first heard it, but writing that last post made me remember that it was the first time (pretty sure) i'd opened it since i left it open for a couple hours three or four nights ago and the whole top of the car was covered in frost so i think we may have a winner. Not sure how the frost coulda screwed it up, but not terribly surprised it did. Think I'll try warming the whole assembly up and see if that helps then on to the lithium while everything is still warm. 99% certain it'll help if not fix my problem (what i wouldn't give for my very own heated garage with a lift and air tools.... ok santa? :))

Great man! When you do reinstall the slider, connect the two rear clips first then slide the slider back as far as it will go and still let you reclip the front two. Once it is back, reconnect the front clips and you should be golden. This is the step i screwed up– i did all four at the same time. Details are important B)

btw, how did you get it out without taking out the sunroof?

LOL, crazy stuff goes on here in New England during storms :P . For reference the cars are behind the building to the right in the second pic. Don't think im gonna walk out there to take a pic.

And he already posted the pics on CarDomain? <_<

Just used Cardomain to host the photos. Didn't know I wasn't allowed to do that

LOL, no worries. Had to go out to put the cars back in storage so I snapped one more pic. Should be a slightly better before/after. Again, just glad I finished up when I did or it could've been nasty. I can take pictures of the repairs once I I have everything apart if anyone wants to see.
