jdlc
Are the heads on 97 855 GLT LPT & 98 V70 GLT interchangeable? If so, is it easier to swap heads or swap engine? Contemplating on a DIY project, otherwise is considering parting out.97 wreck has 125k with running motor, 98 V70 is in good shape & has 150k with #3 zero compression.Additional questions - if to do head swap, is it necessary to 'service' the head before install in a machine shop or just pull out and swap-install. Are the special Volvo tools required. I know some can be fashioned DIY like cam holder and head (or is it cam cover?) puller. Anybody willing to lend tools for the project?Input from those who dunnit is appreciated. Thanks

HPTDoh
I've heard the whole thing is actually cast as one piece and they're "mated" for each other. Not sure how true it is, but as others have said; why risk it on a higher mileage bottom end?
jdlc
I've heard the whole thing is actually cast as one piece and they're "mated" for each other. Not sure how true it is, but as others have said; why risk it on a higher mileage bottom end? Thanks guys for all the response. What I hear is that the head is usually machined to make sure it's mating surface is flat within some mechanical tolerance. But it usually is suggested on blown head gasket cases, the logic being the cause of failure is usually over-heating which can cause warping of the head. If the head is from working motor, then I'm thinking it may not be necessary to machine it, but I'm not sure which is why it's one of my q's on my original post. The mileage difference is only 25k, I've heard members here do head-swap for much higher mileage on their car with 100k'ish head.I thought motor swap is more work physically than head-swap, am I mistaken in my assumption? Also, the V70 seems not to have RMS leak, so one less incentive to pull the motor out.To all who would like to add some thoughts, pls take time to read my orig post for my q's.Thanks
Jippi 855 GLT
they are both lpts so the heads are the same. when your putting a head on its always a good idea to machine it..imo
troyhyde
I think you are totally fine. No problems till the heads got variable timing. Replacing the head is loads easier than pulling the engine. Regular fuel kills the valves. Swap the head and use better gas.Just did it myself last week, now the car runs as smoothly as a sewing machine.
jdlc
Again, thanks for all your input. The score is 3-2 for engine v/s head, I would go with head myself now that it seems they are the same, so 3-3.Hey troyhyde, did you use any special Volvo tools or the diy tools in different threads I've seen enough (to pull the valve cover, to hold the cams, etc.) Also, IS THERE A WRONG WAY TO PULL THE WORKING HEAD that I would fubar it? Lastly, did you have your head reconditioned or did you install a used head, did you have it machined and for how much? (polished as well?)Thanks
