96PlatinumEdition850
Replacing my thermostat today and Napa happens to have one so I was going to buy theirs rather than wait for FCP to ship me one. Is it imperative that I replace my water temperature sensor (ECT) when replacing my thermostat?
billy780
Replacing my thermostat today and Napa happens to have one so I was going to buy theirs rather than wait for FCP to ship me one. Is it imperative that I replace my water temperature sensor (ECT) when replacing my thermostat?I never replace them unless they are bad. I would say do just the thermostat. It is alot easier when you do the T-Stat job.
7 VII 7
you should do it, but do not have todo not ask Oreo/Adam about this... your car will blow up
96PlatinumEdition850
Hahahah, yea I mean my ECT is acting fine at the moment and I'd just like to have my thermostat done now because the car really isn't warming up to normal operating temperatures and I feel bad for it. I'll do the thermostat today but still order the ECT and get it done later this week. Thanks
RedTurbo850
I would do them all at once if you're going to do both.I did not opt to do both. The reason you shouldn't wait is because you need to drain some coolant. Unless you want to reuse coolant (which I guess is ok...........), do it all at once. Oreo931
I'd do both at the same time. Preventative maintenance FTW!
crazykn
The ECT Sensor is a very important sensor that determines when the fan comes on to cool the radiator and engine, can also GREATLY affect MPGs, and overal drivability of the car. Since this sensor is relatively cheap, $30 for a FAE to ~$67 for a Genuine Volvo part, I highly recommend that you replace this sensor while you do this job, as it is relatively easy to do and it can help prevent problems in the future. Disconnect the sensor wire connector before attempting to remove it... because it can be hard to disconnect these connectors in that tight spot. If you do not disconnect it (and unscrew the sensor) and the wires get twisted up for the engine harness side and breaks, you're gonna be screwed..... because the wire connecting it is awfully thin and unprotected (no wiring loom). I remember when I did this, it was the simplest thing in my 10 hour straight hell where i was replacing a radiator, hoses, thermostat, ECT, and the whole PCV system overhaul with a TB cleaning and EGR cleaning. All alone in a cold freezing garage with only the bare essential tools.
Ihatespeedbumps
I always replace them in pairs. Inevitably the ECT will fail 2 weeks after you replace the t-stat.
