Changed The Thermostat Now A Coolant Leak

Recommended Posts

Alright I changed my thermostat over the weekend with no problem and also changed the hose that goes from the resevoir to the thermostat with a silicone hose. I clamped and tighted all bolts but today when I walked out to my car the resevoir was empty and there was a noticable puddle on the ground of coolant. I think it's been leaking since the weekend but I wasn't parking in my driveway on monday or tuesday and couldn't tell. I think it's the silicone hose but I'd like any information as to why it's leaking.

I don't think it's the radiator only because it was never learking until I did my thermostat. Anyways, anything to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Also...is it true that when adding coolant the car should be on?

Hard to guess where it's coming from, where about is it dripping down from?. My bet is that it's leaking from the thermostat housing itself if you didn't get a good seal with the new oring/gasket.

Did you remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing when you did the job? The first time I did mine I disconnected this to make things a bit easier, and didn't get the hose back on quite the same as it was. I had a rather large leak once things heated up.

make sure when you put the gasket on the t-stat that you put it AROUND the t-stat and not under or on top of it... it has a grove in the middle of the gasket that covers the outer edge of the t-stat... Adam/OreO made that mistake.

Definitely put the O ring UNDER the thermostat!

Also the leak is around the passenger side front wheel.

LOL Jeff did you really do this? I made the exact same mistake   ... You probably shouldnt have posted this lololol. Go take off the gasket and put it AROUND the thermostat, there is a slit in it so it can fit around the thermostat.

haha Adam Jr. you are

Who are you, Yoda?

Hahah, yea shouldn't have posted such a silly mistake but never would have realized it was such a silly mistake had I not posted. Thanks for the responses and I'm in the process of changing it right now. Thanks guys! For a minute there I thought I had a SERIOUS problem with the car not a SERIOUS problem with my head.
