Will P1 X70 Manual Tranny Work On 850?

First, let me say that my 94 is currently fitted with AT from 98 S70 T5 and I have no issue with "no speed sensor" tranny (got the signal from ABS).

Second, if I have authoritative answers from folks who dunnit, then I'm willing to buy and store the tranny, and hopefully install it comes summer.

For those who have done manual tranny swap on their 850 from x70 P1 series (I believe the 98/99 x70 tranny is M570 as opposed to m56x for 850s), I need help with basically two questions:

1. I want to know what to expect to be included in the sale (the sale is for transmission only, so wondering if that should include clutch disk, pressure plate & flywheel - apparently low two figure mileage so should still be usable for these three mentioned parts).

2. If I have an 850 MANUAL parts car, will the tranny hardwares work with 98/99 x70 tranny (pedals, shifters, axles, etc like below - will credit the vs member later for his pic)

Thanks and happy holidays everybody!

First of all, Merry Christmas!

The transmission from the S/V70 is still called an M56. There is no M57. There is an M58 which is used for the AWD cars, but you don't want to use that.

The 98 M56 from the early part of the year is pretty identical to those used on 850s. Then Volvo changed the design slightly and made the cars have dual mass flywheels (so different clutch parts - all easily available) and an internal slave cylinder setup. It's just different parts to get than for your last swap if you used an externally setup slave cylinder donor car. If you can find an early 98 then it's the same. But to answer your question, it should all work fine if you are swapping the 850 stuff into a 98. I think it gets more complicated if you are swapping into an ME7 car 99+

Best wishes,

Hey Big Will, thanks for the reply.

You certainly answered some of my questions, but let me re-phrase it and see if what I have in mind will work:

I found a for sale MT from 99, low mileage, I want to buy it in prep for manual swap comes summer for my 94 855.

For the conversion, I know I will need hardwares as I mentioned above with pics, I DON'T have them yet.

Questions:

Will 99 MT fit in my 94?

Will 850 hardwares work with 99 MT (pedals and cables, shifter, axles, etc)?

Thanks

Ahh ok. I think I get it now. You are taking a 99 Manual Transmission S/V70 and transplanting that into a 94 850. You need the various manual swap parts for that 850.

The transmission should work in the 850. It will definitely have an internal slave cylinder which is not how the 850 would have come from the factory but who cares. You will just need to be consistent in terms of buying parts that "go with" the transmission as opposed to the 850 manual. Obviously the trim piece, the shifter - interior parts are 850 parts.

Also, the 99 car had that dual mass flywheel and therefore used a corresponding clutch kit. There is someone on here who figured out that you could use the single mass flywheel and 850 R or 850 T5-R clutch or similar even though he had the transmission that originally came with the former. I'm not sure how that works - sorry. The single-mass kits usually hold more power is the general consensus on this forum and in the Volvo tuning world.

I'm trying not to be confusing. So to sum up when you go to buy a lot of the internal parts that go along w/ the transmission as long as you are consistent in buying the right part #s for that trans, you should be just fine. Alternatively, you can try to buy parts for the 850 as if it had an earlier version of the M56 and have the power holding advantage of better clutch kits available etc. I hope someone who has experience with that can chime in for you.

Hope that helped.

Hey, thanks again. I think I'll pass then. I was under the impression that the later dual mass design is better, aside from the fact that the one for sale has low mileage.

Since I'm in no hurry, I think I'll just wait for a manual 850 parts car to come around, that way, all parts will be available for the swap.

It doesn't matter if the manual tranny is from an NA, right? I wish I could find one with less than 100k miles on it in the future.

Thanks again,

OrleeC
