17 Psi St Ecu Finally Installed

So I finally got the 17psi ST tuned ecu from Mike (mbaker), didn't get a chance yet to push it because of after-hours traffic.

But I can feel the different characteristics it has, car seems to spool even faster, and oh yeah, it can spin the tires from a roll when punched to the floor like Batalia said, even with stock downpipe :).

Like before the ecu swap, the boost is stable, I have not played with my mbc yet but my current 12psi set-up was easily attained with no issues, no spiking, no fading, and the car just rev smoothly to 5.5k rpm but I had to hold back or I'll bump into cars in front of me lol.

I got rid of my ghetto rip-kit and piped it stock, also installed champion coppers gapped at 0.025 in prep for this ecu swap, all others have been done before (stage 0+).

And oh yeah, my car's interior is now two-tone, I got a set of black seats in better shape than my tan seats, and also replaced the lower part of the door panels to gray as well as the rest of the door plastic trims/insert from the same source, and replaced the plastic trims around the doors and pillars, as well as whole carpet - got rid of my fubar/smelly tan floor carpeting and now has the nice gray one, just like my V70.

Peel 'n sealed all the doors and probably have taken care of 70% of interior noise (haven't touched the dash yet).

Next projects: manual swap and exterior paint rehab!

How about you post some pics

Yeah, might do that soon.

If you all remember, I got this car from Corey, so you might see parts which he sold to you installed to it lol.

Got a good price on it but spent more than what I got the car for so far lol.

Sweet...Oliver's already got my money, but I won't get the chip until the spring...really no point right now in the Winter.

What do you plan to do about it running rich, as an ST chip is known to do so?

How do you like the ST tune? I was thinking about trying theirs out since its the cheapest of the S80 T6 tunes, I just wanted to know what people thought of it.

Is there anything to complain about with it?

I love it. Interestingly enough, Mbaker and I had the exact same tune for our cars when we dyno'd that day. His car ran pig rich when he dyno'd, but my car had a perfect AFR. I'm not sure why, and it wasnt totally accurate because they dyno was using an exhaust sniffer (not positive if thats what its called) but either way, it was interesting. I havent had any issues though, and I believe my car is pretty quick :).

What set-up did you run? Just an ECU?

And...what did you put down on that run?

Just an ECU, nothing else. It was when I first got the car, and I hadn't done any stage 0. I made 211 whp and 241 wtq. Less than I wanted but thats what happens when the car isnt at stage 0. I was also only hitting 15 psi and getting some major boost fade.

Baker dyno'd ~231 whp and 250 wtq.

Anyways, since then I've replaced and upgraded a good amount of things (on top of a FULL stage 0), and my car pulls really hard (IMO) now. I am going to have it dyno'd again once I install a custom FMIC.

I have a good baseline since I just replaced my plugs prior to ecu install. The replaced oem Volvo plugs are 'normal' as far as I can tell with the quality/condition and color of the plugs. Not very scientific but I intend to pull the plugs just to see if I'm running rich after doing some serious test runs in the next coming days.

As for Mbaker's tune that I bought, I understand it's for 95AT Turbo originally tuned for 15G, I have 94 Turbo 855AT with 16T and I asked around before buying it, getting authoritative inputs from lostartof and Joseph (JHEIII874T5M) that it's a direct swap and more likely would not require re-tune.

Pix will be up later today :)

Just so you know, you shouldnt expect complete out of the box performance. The car takes several hundred miles to "learn" the ECU and perform how it is supposed to. My break in period was about 350 miles or so. I wasnt seeing all 17psi until then.

My 855 rocks. My expectation is met and then some. I'm now doing 15psi - will adjust the MBC one full turn next run. Logged almost 1k miles of sneaky test runs before I finally registered it last Friday lol. Decided to make my V70 which just turned 10 years and this 855 liab only, and my insurance cost actually went down by $250/year with my Expedition still fully-covered.

Visited a VS'er with comparable 850 Turbo sedan and let him drive my 855 to see what he thinks. I got down to hear the car driven at WOT and it absolutely scream like a banshee in orgasmic ecstasy - tire spin on 2nd in harmony with the exhaust would make a fridgid nun horny... just beautiful. The dude that I let drive my car gave me a thumbs-up, maybe he was being polite for little I did for his manual swap project, lol.

As some know, this is a cheap project car of some sort for me, set my goal at 18psi/240whp from the time I got the car, and I'm a happy camper at this point. I have not timed anything, nor dyno'ed the car, but I just realized that I totally missed-out for not getting a HPT turbo ten years ago lol. My V70 takes forever to hit 90+, but my 855 hit that plus 25 more like nothing, and I'm not even WOT yet.

I'm glad I got this car, I'm going to get a lot of tickets for this lol.

Next in line: lowering springs, revival of my 17"Modas R2, exterior paint/body issues, engine bay cleaning/polishing

Manual swap is at the bottom of mods for now, seems my AT from '98 is just fine, shifts smoothly and kick-down is really working for me now (plus saw the amount of work for the swap, lol).

Yeah, I know, pix. Later... :)

3" dp will help you notice more gains

i found my ST tune worked a lot nicer after the stock dp was removed for a 3"

....but i upgraded 18T at the same time, so a new turbo could have helped also...

but from my brief AFR readings, everything seemed to be in order at high boost levels

Done and done with suspension (B&G springs for sedan, rear HD with rear R-sway bar) and revival of my 17" Moda R2 wrapped in Bridgestone Re92 215/45/ZR17 all around. Drop is approx 1.25" all around. Ride is just okay, tolerable and not really harsh, handling is very good. Without the camber 'correction' bolts, the front driver side went past 0.1 degrees off factory spec on allowed neg camber, all others are within spec. I can live with it.

And my two-tone interior (gray carpet, gray A & B pillar, etc ftw)
