Pcv Replacement Problem

I just finished up replacing my PCV and started the car and I got problems.

The car starts but immediately idles to a high RPM, loud whine and then wants to stall. I can keep it going with a little gas but it revs high and rough and makes kind of a cough - not sure how else to describe that.

I was very methodical and had no mystery hoses or bolts left over.

Any suggestions as to where to start or what to do next?

Check tightness of inlet manifold bolts. You may have a vacuum leak. But do not overtighten either!

Check the seal of the intake manifold, throttle body(if you took it off) and of course vac hose connections. Sounds like unmetered air.

I torqued to 14 lbs when I reinstalled the manifold.

I left the throttle body and the fuel rail & injectors on. I'll check to see if I knocked something out of place on the throttle body.

Throttle cable is working freely...

Where is the MAF sensor??

Just above the air box theres a connection where u plug the cable just make sure its plugged in correctly, ya make sure the throtte cable goes back to its proper position it might be stuck on something so thats why your car jumps to 4k rpm when u turn it on

The maf sensor is located on the top half of the airbox cover and it should have an electrical plug going to it.

I had a similar problem after doing my PCV and here is my advice, please dont take it offensively, because it is very helpful. If the car ran fine BEFORE you did the PCV repair then clearly it is something that you did that has affected it. You need to retrace your steps and make sure that all of the connections are for one connected, and also secure. Check everything you touched, and might have touched. Usually its something simple that you just want to say "DOH!" to. I would check the TB gasket, manifold gasket, and injectors. Also make sure that all the injector plugs are plugged in. :)

good luck!

DOH indeed!

Found the problem, fixed the problem. The car is running great!

Great feeling when you turn the key and the car starts up sounding better than ever. Round the block a few times and it's running smooth. No more exhaust smell in the cabin from my busted PCV.

I'll work on a write-up with pictures.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Happy New Year all!

what ended up being the problem

Rookie mistake.

The first time I put the manifold on I thought I could attach the PCV hose to the left side of the intake while it was in place.

Couldn't do it, the space is too tight.

Pulled the manifold back off and connected the hose.

There's a small bracket on rightmost lower manifold mounting bolt. ( For those of you who haven't done this procedure the lower bolts just need to be loosened not removed) In the process of taking the manifold off and replacing it the bracket made it's way back on the mounting bolt so it was between the manifold and the block.

Never saw it.

While I was trying to figure out the problem my wife said she could hear a whistle while the car was revving high and pointed to the right side of the manifold. I spotted the problem, repositioned the bracket, torqued the bolts back down and hoped I hadn't screwed something up beyond repair.

The car started fine and the engine ran smoothly.

I feel pretty freakin' lucky I didn't end up with a big problem from that little bracket.

good thing the wife has a good ear. :)

I'm sure its a PITA when she hears shit you don't want her to hear!

I had a few stupid mistakes after mine that took me a few minutes to figure out also.

Mainly two electrical connections that werent completely seated and snapped in to place. (TPS and an Injector)

The Injector made it stumble horribly, and I only picked it up when I physically touched each Injector connection one at a time. When I hit the problem, it changed the stumble for a second. SNAP. Stumble solved. Someone else just had this problem recently after their service.

The TPS caused the car to remain in a safe-mode low gear, and the SPORT/ECONOMY/WINTER switch flashing with an arrow indicator light telling me to Upshift. Pulled the code for the TPS, removed and reseated the connector - problem solved.
