2001 C70 Possible Etm Issue

Finally my C70 is good to go and in my posession. First drive, I start the car and notice about 46 lights on the intrutment panel. Service, CEL, ABS, ETS, etc. First thing I think is the ETM, I drive it home which is about a 30 mile trip. After about 10 mins the car just jerks really hard while I was cruising at 45mph. Feels like it went into neutral and back into gear in a split second. From here on when I would come to a stop the car would need 2-3k revs (Auto) to get it going, after 4-5 stop lights I realize it's starting in 2nd gear or as if it's in winter mode. The longer I drive the wierder things get, RPM surging (going downhill usually) dropping from 2k-1k 1k-2k over and over and then dissapearing.

So I get home (Scared as hell) turn the car off for about 10 mins and start it again. It again runs perfectly fine until about 10-12 mins where that abrupt jerk occurs again and it again starts in second or third or whatever gear and requires half throttle to get momentum.

I called the local dealership (Kearny Volvo - Here in San Diego) inquired about the extended warranty on the ETM. Made an appointment for Monday at 8AM. Before hanging up I asked if I would be charged he said only if the car is not applicable for the software upgrade OR no issues are found - Then I'd have to pay the labor at whatever rate they ask.

I had a local Junkyard who has close ties with some Dealerships farther south run the Vin and it has not gotten the ETM service yet. Now do these guys do the software upgrade regardless of whether the car NEEDS it or do they do it to whatever model years are included in the Extended Warranty? I really don't want to go there and have this guy do nothing and pay labor - he said make an early appointment because it CAN take up to 4 hours. The dude made it sound like he's not gonna do jack and make me fork over some cash for him standing around.

Is this 100% ETM issue, ABS Module? I want to go to the dealer in confidence, I don't want to stop driving this car it's a blast!

Thank You

Your ETM is covered to 200K under warranty. Why would you pay for anything?

The guy specifically said that if they find no problems or find no reason to do the software upgrade they make me pay for labor. He said I will sign a waiver for the diagnostic, if the diagnostic is applied toward the software upgrade it's free under warranty like you said. BUT if they see nothing wrong or don't see any problems with the ETM they make me pay for the diagnostic. I do not want to pay.

They will run the VIN at the dealer and check if it has been done. If it has been done do not send it into the shop and you will not have to pay.

Honestly I think you have a lot more going on than the ETM issue and need to pay the diagnostic charge to get it figured out. With that car being ME7 you're not going to be able to figure it out on your own at home without a VIDA machine. Time to buck up and pay to have it properly diag'ed. Sorry but part of owning a newer Volvo.

^^ i agree with him. usually all dealers will say that its free unless something else unrelated to the etm is bad, its usually to cover their azzes. when you bring it in and you have time stay there until its done so you see that its done. i had a dlrship say its done but it wasnt and someone got fired for that. also when you bring it in to the dealer make sure you tell them you want a diag only, and ask them to call you with the result. make a point of telling them that you dont want any other work done to the car unless you approve it. i got my parents bmw from the dealer a few weeks ago and they called me after the diag told me whats wrong and asked if i wanted the work done. they told me usually owners would just say to fix it and dont care whats wrong and just wanted it fixed regardless of the cost. when i was there to get the car the guy in front of me cut a no questions 15g check for repairs on a 05 7ser, i was like wow...

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah when I go I was planning on staying there for the entire duration. I'll make sure to tell them not to fix anything without my say.

I've already had the VIN run and the car has NOT had the ETM software upgrade. When I take it, if there is any major issue with the Transmission as I'm afraid of - I'm letting this car go. Don't wanna deal with it.

Just an update for anyone interested.

Took the car to the dealer had the ETM software upgrade performed under the extended warranty (recall)

Soon as I started up the car the idle was crazy and all over the place. When I got to the first stop light I engaged the throttle the same amount I'm use to doing all the time with the car except this time the car flew! Overall it felt much much more responsive and quick, especially down low. After a few mins the idle returned to normal. All this joy ended soon as the old symptoms returned. The car jolted downshifted and stayed in 3rd gear everytime I took off from a stop after about 7 mins of driving.

Once I got to our Junkyard (My family owns one) the car just started dying/sputtering. Soon as you turn it off and on again it returns to normal for 7 mins jolts and the transmission does the 3rd gear garbage again. Talked to the Volvo yard nextdoor and they said it's the Throtte body that needs cleaning. It's cutting fuel or some crap. So I left the car with them to fiddle with.

Well I officially hate this car with a passion. If the throttle body cleaning doesn't do the trick I'm not paying for a new one and the car goes to the lot next door to part out. Taking the IS300 instead, maybe I should have to begin with but the C70's exlusivity sucked me in. (As well as the boost)

I'm sorta lucky though as all the work done to the car so far has been free of charge. I left it with the lot next door as they are good friends with my famiy and want to rid my bro of the pissing and whining he does about how horrible this car is LoL. He tells me everday "bad decision, bad decision."

I dunno might ditch the IS300 and just go for a WRX. Not sure.

What is an Angry Lobster doing in San Diego? Shouldn't you be in Maine or something?

Also you had the ETH software and should have had the free cleaning as well. HOWEVER did you ever have all the codes read? Any generic scan tool should be able to read the ECM for P codes? AutoZone does it for free to my understanding by other posts here? Are there no AutoZones in San Diego?

Just some thought's on my end

Yup I'm gonna pull the codes tomorrow at Autozone. Apparantly the dealerships around here do not clean the the throttle body for you, just flash the software. On my receipt it said "Original Software was lost during initial upload." I guess that's why it took them 4 hours.

OK now were gettin' somewhere

PLease report back with P codes (if any) and I'm sure the plethora of knowledge here on V/S will gladly enlighten or assist you in many possible ways.

Under the ETM warranty they are required to clean the ETM for you if the software download dosen't resolve the issue.

  • 2 weeks later...

A little update.

The transmission staying in 3rd was resolved with a new PNP switch.

The car surging was resolved with a TB cleaning. Although it still *barely* surges at idle, dunno why.

The only issue left is the CEL, which I'm being told is a corroded wire to the fuse box? Something like that.

We would need a little bit more description on the wire corroded in the fuse box.

We would need a little bit more description on the wire corroded in the fuse box.

Check the B+ wire from the batt to the fuse box underhood. If you remove the fuse box cover, by L/S strut, you will see a 12mm nut, under this nut is the wire in question. It is usually all burnt and corroded, and needs to be replaced, as it can`t supply proper voltage to fuse box like this. It is 4 wires all spliced to the same connector. Hope this helps. There is also a nipple for the breather box under the intake that plugs up causing throttle issues.

Ok so changing that corroded wire was not the issue. Check engine like remains and the ETS light has returned. This was after the software upgrade, about 1 week later the car is idling insanely. Shooting up and down almost stalling and lurching forward when you let off the gas. Super dangerous to drive unless you drive with left foot braking.

Took it back to Volvo who NOW did the cleaning. It had no affect and the car was still bucking when off throttle and lurching forward when in gear. So they offered to put in a new ETM free of charge as part of the extended warranty. Part comes in on Tuesday so I'll update as to how the car drives after install.
