Constantly Low On Coolant

Another high risk thing to check is your transmission fluid. 850's have a history of leaks between teh radiator and the integrated transmission oil cooler - it does not leak externally, just into the transmission, leading to transmission failure.

Zimbo

Is the carpet wet on the passenger side under the dash?

nope

I'll check my hoses, around my firewall, waterpump around the t-belt enclosure, fire-wall heater hose couplings, radiator and around the radiator(t-stat area), check my oil, heater core and heater hoses by the block below the distributor.

thanks all for the info! I really appreciate all the feedback.

now to wait for it to stop storming over here then I can take a look at my car.

Ironically, I now have a coolant odor inside the car, I checked for core leaks on passenger side floor and fire wall but nothing is wet. Is it possible that there is a leak in the hose, per TCA217's post, and the odor is coming in thru fresh are vents? I don't have a noticeable loss in fluid, however.

"When I first bought my 855 I was losing coolant also. I looked for leaks everywhere with no luck. Then one night I was checking something under the hood with a flashlight and saw a very fine mist coming from the heater hose going into the firewall. It was not the "O" rings but about 2 inches from the firewall. The hose had a very small crack that would allow steam to escape when the car was at operating temp and then when you shuit it down, everything cooled off and the crack in the hose would not leak anymore. Drove me nuts till I happpened to find it that night. Oh and no white residue on the hose either, the crack was on the bottom part of the hose so you could not see it very well and there was no coolant running anywhere. So get a flashlight out and check it out, make sure there is no other lights around so you can see the mist, hope this might help someone."

actually when the heater core leaks, it usually pools up under the driver's side carpet. Also leaky o-rings on the heater hoses on the cabin side of the firewall will cause coolant to pool up under the driver's side carpet.

You may want to pull the carpet away from the heater core on the driver's side, it is easy to do (see the pinned thread), you can check them both that way.

Countless places where it could leak from:

* Expansion tank (cracks at the bottom)

* Every hose to and from the radiator (check the hose clamps)

* The radiator itself (tank sides)

* Heatercore (rotten core)

* Water pump

Use a UV light to look for leaks that you can't see, antifreeze should glow green under a black light.

Check for a hairline crack on radiator at hose that goes to t-stat. Very common and sneaky leak. Replaced my radiator in August.

+1

Check the hose from the Coolant res. to the thermostat, that bugger got dry rotted at the t-stat end and leaked like a siv.

Thanks for the correction, my friend. B) UV lite, huh? CSI stuff, cool. I'll try it out.

  • 4 weeks later...

OK, problem solved!

Well not really.

I sold the car.

I took a look around. Couldn't find any coolant.

So rather than try I sold my car.

Now the search is on for a 850 Turbo 5spd!

Perhaps a bit rash, you think?

My wife jokes that every time my truck needs new tires i trade the damn thing in ;) , but dumping it for a little coolant leak? wow :o

i hope you told them about the coolant leak

Oh yea. I disclosed all my knowledge of the vehicle.

The person I purchased the car from did and so did I.

Couldn't have that on my conscious.

I told the buyer everything that I could think of.

There were other reasons aside from the coolant leak as to why I sold it.

Personal matters and rather than get the parts to make it look like a newer 850,

bumpers, lights, etc... I'd rather just get a newer one, with a TURBO! Aww Yea!

So thanks again for the all input as I appreciate it always.

Now to find me a TURBO 5spd!

I filled up my coolant reservoir about two months ago, and last week the Coolant Low light came on. I added some more coolant a few days later. Today, I went to look at the hoses going to and fro, and lo and behold, this is what I saw:

2001370017450201313_rs.jpg

The hose was a little lose, and the coolant was leaking out from it. I pulled it back down, but I might need a new clamp.

Could the leaking coolant cause (or has caused) any damage? You can see the residue in the pics.

leaking coolant should not be an issue. I have heard about all kinds of coolant leaks, and had leaks on my cars over the years, but never heard of the coolant doing damage.

now, if the coolant leaks too far and the engine gets hot, that's another story as far as damage ...
