P1618 After M56 Swap

Contemplating on swap.

Asked SpeedTuning if they do manual re-map, on top of 17psi mod, will post their answer here.

But I am under the impression that some of the swapees just leave the AT ecu alone and live with the cel (P1618). I don't think pulling the bulb is the way to go (another reason to fail emission), and living with it seems odd since one would not know if there is another legitimate engine code (which is also another issue for pulling-out the cel bulb).

Another question, is M56L with 155k from '93 NA worth the trouble? After all, my 94 855 has 160k on it and the motor is effing strong (with 17psi AT tune).

I'll respond to your PM in a few minutes, just hang tight, I'm a little busy right now.

You can live with a P1618 code, I am. I just run the AT ECU in the car and it runs fine. The dealer said to expect a smoother ride when I get the RICA remap (Oliver can't do it, I had checked with him), but didn't think it was a big deal either.

As for the transmission, it's hard to answer the question without knowing the history of the car and its maintenance schedules. Was the car used by a mail man, lots of stop and go ? Was it driven hard by some kid ? Did someone learn to drive stick on it ? Etc... In general, you can expect those transmissions (even the L version) to hold up well, including higher hp. Don't spend an arm and a leg for a trans, you should score one for a few hundreds dollars.

I got mine of tbricks for $500. It included the tranny, flywheel, center console, pedal box, master/slave cylinders, an axle, shifter and all linkage. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Got a decent hookup for an R clutch for a tad over $300, and getting the flywheel resurfaced should be in the neighborhood of 25-30 bucks. I spaced it all out so I'm not hurting too much. Tomorrow I'll order new axle seals and a rear crank seal and get to work on the interior. I plan on the swap next weekend with a little help of a long weekend....took the 11th and 14th off work.

Is the flywheel for Turbo or NA? Did you get a M56L or M56H, and what mileage? Where would you take the flywheel for resurfacing?

As for your topic ...you won't pass emissions if you have OBDII port check with a MIL on. 1618 is a speed sensor code I believe and I don't know the performance/swap end of it but I'm sure there is a way around it. Pulling the MIL bulb won't work either ;)

Yeah, I'm wondering about that, maybe these folks who rides around with them are friends with the emission tester ;). Plus I'm not sure I want to drive around with CEL on, I mean, how would I know if there is a legit issue if it's always on?

You did a swap, didn't you? You don't have this code afterwards like most do? What's the trick?

Thing is, I just got my ST tuned ecu (AT) and pretty happy with it's performance, if the ECU manual remap would add another couple of hundreds of dollars to my planned swap, I'm having second thoughts.

True that. Im just anti-RICA after being screwed by jross and then basically being blown off by Roel

I got an answer from ST, there may be hope for low-budget manual re-map! They said they would look at it.

Told them there is a demand for it, and talk is active in VS, so maybe they will do some research.

What year is the tranny out of?

I didn't have that code after my swap...

My car is 94 855 Turbo.

I don't have a tranny yet, but eyeing M56L off a 93 NA.

I don't want CEL after swap, and spending hundreds of $ for ecu is a dealbreaker for me, considering I now have 17psi AT ecu.

What's your set up?

Car model year: ___________

Tranny year: ____________ M56L or M56H

ECU: (Auto/Manual?) _____________

Did you get flashing arrow? _______

or Did you remove the TCU to get around the flashing arrow? _________

is your CEL bulb working (lol)? ___________

I may have read it wrong, but in this thread http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=87858, it seems you had this issue, indicating the PNP switch hard-wiring will not do the trick, and 2nding Matt B saying the only way to get rid of this pesky light is by 're-mapping' AT ecu to manual ecu.

So clearly, you know a secret that swappies (and swappy wannabes) crave for.... spill it Bro :)

Anxiously awaiting your response,

OrleeC

Hey Orleec, I just recieved your pm. It'd be great to see you here. I got the whole setup from an n/a 850. So I'm pretty sure it's an L?? To get my flywheel resurfaced, I'm taking it to Carlquist Competition Engines in Oakville, CT. I'm friends with one of the guys in the shop, so he'll probably stop by my house to pick up the flywheel and drop it off on his way home....royal treatment eh? haha.

  • 2 weeks later...

any news here on figuring out how to not get the P1618 code? I have a 15psi auto ST chip in my car right now, but was wondering if anyone had figured anything out.

I haven't done the swap yet, haven't even bought any parts, but I want to tie up any loose ends before I get started.

Emissions is usually government enforced (be local, state, county ect...). Basically learn from them of what to do in that situation, and in theory it would have to be morally ethical. Example: Lobbyist and private interests groups influencing the government and getting certain laws passed or avoided. Solution: see if a crisp Ben Franklin can help you out with the emissions controller ;)

*****warning:this is just one example of how our government works, please don't try this at home********
