Denovae
my xbox 360 sits directly infront of a fan. never had any problems and it's an old one. it's been able to stand up to hours of halo 3 abuse.

Fudge_Brownie
My little bro bought a red ring of death victim off a kid for like $100, called MS and exchanged it. He plays COD4 very often. Now the unit appears to be dead again, it will freeze up in under 3 minutes of loading any game, at random. We think it might be the CD-ROM drive, but we aren't sure. Either way, MS has sent out a box for him too.

Boost3237
open xbox, remove X clamps close xbox, red ring no more.there is some stupid trick that you smother the xbox in towels and overheat it (let it run for 20mins while smothered) then wait 45mins for it to cool down and it will work again, but only for a short period of time... so if your pissed and wanna play and bash the xbox you could do that... i have no idea why this works but it does.google a tutorial on how to remove X clamps... you'll never need to worry about 2/3 of RROD situations. the only one it doesnt prevent is HD crash.have fun

I am thinking of adding a small fan to the back of the entertaiment system to vent out all the hot air. But you should really check up on the xbox forums about how much damage these add on components have done to peoples 360sOn the side note who plays online ? Mine is screen name is Chilledman Add me so I can kick you ass in COD4 and halo3 lol probally not but its fun to say :P

Denovae
grrr i had my first problem with my xbox 360 today. "unreadable disk"... i have the notorious hitachi drive. the thing is no longer under warranty so i'm just gonna made a new one, then mess around with this old one modding it. matt1122
No. no reason to spend extra money than nessesary. The new 360s are getting better. at my work, we used to have 2 extra 360s in the back just incase that happened (we've at least sent out 40-50 of 60 or so 360s) Now, they hardly break at all. some have the occasional "insert xbox 360 game disc" on the screen, but other than that, no ring of deaths anymore. The new system boards they used in the elites and newer lower end models are supposed to be much better.Still, I think I'll buy a cooling unit after I get my cabinet fans installed - just to be safe.
