What Would You Do?

Hi guys

I've been driving a 1998 S70 T5, 120k, for about two years now and even though it's a fairly old car there are several things I like about it. In the last year I have put new brakes all around, new front axles both sides, QBM endlinks and a few other things so I have some fresh money invested in it. I am considering spending a few grand on mods such as new suspension, ecu upgrade, rims and some other goodies.

However, before I do that I'd like to hear you guys's opinion on something. Me and my wife will likely need a second car in not too long and I have been considering getting a S60 T5 (2001-2003 <80k mi). I don't want to go ahead and put too much money into the the 70 and then have to do it all over on the 60. Wifey probably couldn't care less about +40 hp and stiffer suspension, so that would be a waste of money.

For those of you guys having experience on both of these cars, which one would is more fun to mod and giving the best return for the money? Also is the engine in the S60 T5 basically the same as in my 70?

Appreciate the help..

Another question:

If I decide to get a C70 instead of a S60 but have already put an aftermarket suspension kit (shocks/springs) on the S, would it also fit on the C70? What about switching a remapped ecu for a 98 S70 T5 to 98 C70 T5?

Don't the S60s have the Me7 crap that I hear everyone complaining about? Or drive by wire?

yes im pretty sure S60's have the Me7, basically that the engine is controlled electronically instead of mechanically. ik specifically in S70's that 98 was the only year with the Me6( <_< ), but that it was mechanically controlled. with the 99-2k S70's problems arose ik at least with the ETM, which either needed to be cleaned or replaced. idk i assume that since the late model S70's had it then the S60 would have it. and yes keep the S70, one of the last true pre-ford volvos.

The ecu from a 98 S70 will go into a 98 C70. 1998 C70's have some fit and finish issues (worse than regular C70s) that you need to be aware of before purchasing. Do your homework before buying a C70s...much like the V70Rs they have issues (like all car lines do!) as I hate to see people trashing the cars because they didn't do their homework before buying. Case in point- C70 window regulators go bad and is a very expensive job, and hard to get someone to do correctly. Plan on $1000. If you've done your research before buying you should know this.

Id do the S70 because it will be cheaper to mod. The S60 can be done, and honestly it's just as easy. Everyone is scared of the ETM but honestly...it's been out since 1999 (thats almost 10 years now!) it's figured out at this point and we honestly are not really seeing any issues with it and even the old cars with issues, most of those were taken care of under an extended warranty volvo offered on the ETM.

It really comes down to which car you like better.

Remeber, everyoned you've asked has either a x70 or 850. Sounds a little biased to me. Do a little research. Modding an S60 can be just as wonderful as modding a s70. However, if you have your heart set on modding-get the x70. Its been out for longer, more support, more mods than whats available for the s60, and most mods are cheaper. 01-02 s60's tranny's seem to go out (Look at me, I think I am witty) around 100k or so. If you'd get one between 01-02 get a manual, and if not get a auto/manual in 03. The s60 is a bit heavier than the s70 as well. Once again, its all according to your personal tastes and preferences. Do yourself a favor, and see what each have to offer before you make your final decision. ALSO, if you do go with a x70, a lot of people on this board would be able to help you mod and solve problems (if any) with your car.
