Tin Box
Hi guys, anyone have much experience with '99 and up vvt system.Bought a t5 that had a recently rebuilt head and has had the trouble code from day one. I suspect that the repair shop didn't have the factory tool to set the cams correctly. The vvt solenoid looks fresh, and works on the bench flowing as it should. I've tried adjusting (retarding) the cam with no luck - go too far and it won't start. Anyone know if the code is accurate ie is it actually advanced or is it just not right? Does anyone in BC have a factory cam lock tool that could be rented/borrowed for an evening? Alternatively could someone throw up a good pic of the factory tool, and I can make one. I'm assuming that the cam slots should be horizontal when locked. When the factory crank stop is used, does the crank gear mark line up on the front cover?Has anyone had a vvt gear go bad....maybe having too much travel? Thanks in advance. MrWinkey
The tool is about $200 to wind the VVT back up . However I feel the car should still start even if it isn't wound properly? I don't know though as I have never tried to start one with it improperly wound up? Did they install cam seals or just a belt? If just a belt then set your cams straight up on the marks ? Ihatespeedbumps
I have seen quite a few CVVT hubs that had to be replaced because they were faulty and kept setting CEL's. If they head was off, it is possible they didn't set the hub up correctly when they re-installed it.
smokin' T5M
Make sure the reset solenoid is working and the new gasket with the screen was installed as well. Also check timing. The VVT needs to be torque at about 95 ft.lbs. and set in the full clockwise lock point. If the VVT is even the slightest bit off that lock point you degree measurements when it goes to adjust will be out of sync. Was the engine sludged up or something before the rebuild? Was the engine sludged up or something before the rebuild?Unfortunately I don't have any history on the car, but the head has been rebuilt, along with with new cam belt, seals, tensioners, water pump etc. My guess is the belt broke and took out the head. Very clean car otherwise. I just did a breather system replacement to be safe but it didn't really need it. The solenoid is dated '03 and seems to work ok on the bench with a power supply. Tracked down a fact tool today so at least that side of things will be right. Thanks for the help everyone.
