Sandro Seminara
I was changing a friends timing belt today and started to think about my bros. 850 in which he has 220,000 mile on his clock. I've changed his 96 timing belt every 60,000 miles so it was last done at 180,000. So that means he has 20,000 or about a year till I have to replace it again. No my concern is that the dampner and the pulley are both original. The pulley spins without a problem and the dampner isn't leaking. But since they are original I plan on replacing them the next time around, but should I be worried that they'd go in the next 20,000 miles or am I just being overly concerned?Regards

matt b
You're lucky they lasted that long. Change them when you change the belt again and inspect the water pump, it could be a good time to throw a new one in there as well.
jazzyjeff
I just replaced the belt, pulley, tensioner, and water pump. Got all the parts for around $220 from FCP. My tensioner exploded and the belt started to slip and wore through the cover. When I took off the timing belt cover, the bearings all fell to the ground...lol It had 150K+ on it though so I guess it was time.

Wow, you're lucky! So that's really just a bit more than scheduled 140k... Hmmm, now I'm worried again lol.
Sandro Seminara
From my understanding it's very rare for them to spontaniously break.
Dmsee
IF you so worried change it along with a new timing belt.

Hmmm, now I'm worried again lol.Nope, no bent valves, rods or anything else. I was REAL lucky. I started to heard this scraping noise when I was on my way home, drove the last few miles, pulled into my driveway, popped the hood and saw the belt wearing through the cover. Like I said, I took the cover off and the bearings all fell to the ground along with the red/orange cap that was supposed to seal them...lol The belt was changed at 80k but everything else was still original. Pretty good chance you'd bend some valves though. :)

(BTW, I meant bent valves, not rods lol)At the rate our V70 is used, it will not be until summer of 09 before we hit 140k - which means the t-belt itself will be 6 years old, and all other components 12 years old.Maybe I should consider doing the 2nd t-belt for our V70 this summer, it will be at least 15k early mileage-wise, but it will be a cheap insurance for the engine and will give me some peace of mind. We will have about 125k on the V70 by summer, so if I replace all t-belt service related components along with the belt and they are expected to last for two t-belt changes, I can at least hope to see our V70 hit 265k.
