mbsl98
Hi Guys,I am getting myself a little confused. I am getting a code 514 - low speed fan problem, and have been doing some checking. Everything I see suggests that my '95 855Turbo has a 2-speed cooling fan. I know that there are two power leads into the fan, red and green, equating to high and low speed power sources per some write-ups. However, when I look at fan replacements on FCP and Eeuro, the fan listed for all 850's and non-turbo 70's doesn't mention 2 speeds, while the x70 Turbo fans are listed as 2 speed and double the price. That suggests that the 850 fan is really only one speed, with separate power from the AC and the ECT for water temp each turning on the only speed available. More confusing is that both teh 850's and teh x70's list teh same fan relay for all, turbo, 2 speed, or not. Can anyone add some illuminating info on what the differences are?Separately, my particular fan problem is that code 514 lights up the check engine light when the fan is activated by increased water temperature (prolonged idling, for instance). the AC function is not relevant because the system has a leak and is not currently charged (its cold up here). The fan does in fact kick on just as expected, and shuts off as expected, the temp stays exactly where it should, but the light comes on. In other words, everything seems to act just fine, eccept for triggering the code. Note that I have a new fan relay and ECT, which I replaced a couple of months ago purely as preventive maintenance since the ECT on our '98 S70T5M failed at the same mileage (113k) at that time - just bought 2 of each for luck. Any suggestions on what would cause the code when the fan actually comes on as required would be very appreciated.Mike
randomdude
only thing i can say, is that mine does the same thing, same code. and i replaced the relay, which did nothing. so i guess my motor is burned out. there is a wiring diagrahm in one of the pinned threads at the top of the maintenance page. if you find that one of the wires is for low speed fan you could run a 12v jumper wire to each wire. see what happens. but i assume no liability. mbsl98
Thanks - good to know it's not a unique problem. Can anyone definitively say if the 850 cooling fan is one speed or two? If two, will it kick to high if the low speed has a problem? Thanks
