The Chronicles Of Area 34, formerly 55

Driven near 2600 miles with the RS so far. Topped 160 mph last Sunday. barely i must say. Damp weather and strong headwind, bit from the side, made it an exhilarating experience. I thought I had picked the right piece of German Autobahn but there was a lot of traffic and only had one real opportunity to keep the throttle open for a while. Tremendous fun, didn't touch the Volvo V70 in the last week.. :D Also discovered that the audio plays nice with iPhone Bluetooth streaming which is a nice extra

Back to reality..

With all the fun I didn't do much with the SD7's engine build. received and installed the proper sized lifter buckets. Cams are back in and the lid closed. Added most of the distribution except for the belt. Didn't make up my mind about the VVT pulley yet. Lock it one way or the other or machine a new fixed pulley, don't know yet.

Discovered an o-ring issue or better said missed it completely. because of the different placement of the oil filter there is an extra o-ring added to the block girdle at the crank pan side. In this spot the girdle normally is machined for o-ring fitment but because I'm using an RN based block this part isn't machined. Saw it to late else I could haven machined it while the engine was still apart. Other solution was to machine the crank pan which I did. with all the confusion I wanted to make it fit so after finishing the machining i sealed and mounted the crank pan to the engine. Once finished i noticed that the oil return connection in the block also needed to be changed.. RNC's use a different spot in the girdle for oil return..

Being pissed as i was I left the engine for what it was and only touched it again today. Pulled the crank pan again and threaded the RN oil return hole and put in a screw plug with loctite added. Next the RNC location needed to be drilled for G1/2 thread which needs to be near 19 mm / ~0.75". Only had conical mounted drill bit's available in the proper size for pillar drilling machine's but the hand e-drilling machine only accepts 12 mm cylindrical. <_< Nothing the lathe couldn't fix.. :)

Pretty time consuming for a couple of holes..

Sounds like a giant pain, but so goes the life of working on/modding cars. :(

Yes but normally I have things figured out before mounting things back together..

Added a single mass flywheel, S60R friction and a Spec pressure plate and mounted the gearbox to the engine. Hope it'll work.

For the record,

November 4. Maiden lap with the RS500 at the Nürburgring.

sd500-ring-04-11-2010.png

A quick mid week visit. Left home at 10:30 AM. Arrived at the Ring near 12:45. First lap at 12:59 immediately followed by a second lap after which the gas tank was empty. 307 km, 50 ltr. :D

Coffee break. Little after 14:00 another two laps. Headed home near 14:45 and arrived at home at 17:15. Total trip 630 km.

Amazing how everything falls in to place once driving the Ring.. B)

Update,

All engine mounts arrived,

Distribution side,

Gearbox side,

And the torque mount,

Normally I can borrow a cam lock tool from the dealer but after picking up the tool twice and having to bring it back before using it because they needed it I decided to make my own lock tool,

Also made a VVT delete pulley,

  • 3 weeks later...

Couple of pics of the VVT delete mounted to the engine,

Changed the water pipe of the 5 cylinder to RNC turbo type. Mounted an RN type pipe before but the water line to the turbo is running to close to the ATP manifold IMO. Also didn't like the, blocked, water pipe part running to the head because an RNC has no pipe running to the head.

Think I made the last trip with the C30 with the 4 cylinder fitted last week,

nov10.jpg

Semi's did OK in cold weather but put the car in the shed before the snow.

Parked the RS500 next to the C30 for now. Drove it last week before the snow and it did very well. The 19" Conti tires remain pretty constant in behavior even when the weather is near freezing. On a small roundtrip in to Germany I managed to reach a new top speed of 265 km/h, near 165 mph on the speedo. Unfortunately there wasn't enough space to take it higher, still some juice left. For now the last road trip with this car in to Germany because as of last Monday winter tires are mandatory and the RS500 doesn't have any.

When the snow clears I think I will rearrange the cars so the C30 can be put on the auto lift to remove the 4 cylinder engine and to prepare for the new parts.

The original doors are a bit out of shape and do not close that well. They will be removed once the weather clears. The new overhead door is also remote operated.. B)

Much better!

My old garage has double swing doors, royal pita, but I have not enough overhead to install rollups in their place :(
