True Swede
Hey folksI am about to black out my original S70 grill in the wait to find an XC grille at a reasonable price. I will be using Plasti Dip. My question is, how do I remove the slash? From what I can see it requires some special tools, but of course I may very well be wrong. Since I have your attention I have a second question. While I am at it I figured I'd Plasti Dip the two lower grill pieces next to the fogs. I haven't been able to take a good look underneath to see how they are attached. What's the procedure getting them out?Except for sanding before using Plasti Dip, what other tips do you guys have?Any help much appreciated../TrueSwede
helodrv
I braced my grill on wooden blocks with the slash facing down. I made sure that none of the slash was resting on the wooden blocks. Then I took a punch - but you could use a wooden dowel or a small screwdriver - and gently tapped the pins that stick through the clips until they released. Then I collected the clips and stored them together for reassembly. To reassemble the slash and the grill, I put the slash in place. I turned the grill face down again. But this time, I put the wooden blocks under the pins in the slash. Then I placed the clip on top of the pin. I found a socket from my socket wrench set that just fit over the pin but was not too much larger. Then I gently tapped the clip back in place, using the socket as a driver. As far as prep for the PlastiDip, I sanded lightly. Then I cleaned the grill with Prepsol. You could use something like MEK or thinner. But in any case, be sure to wipe down the grill well to get rid of any sanding dust. Then spray lightly, applying the PlastiDip in several coats. It works great! What would you rather be flying?
True Swede
What would you rather be flying? Thanks Helodrv, I'll give it a try..As for the flying, I've been flying a turboprop in the Caribbean and Africa for the last few years but am hoping to get into a jet very soon. I am going to talk to a company here out of Dallas this week who are flying a B-350 and two Citation III's. Seems like a done deal so I am quite excited about it. I assume you're a rotorhead?/True Swede
skeet2121
A flat head works too. Just bend those ring things until they begin to slide.
helodrv
Yep. Started out in King Airs and G-1's but ended up flying EMS in Bell 412s. It helps to be home every night when you get old and gray...Good luck on the big ships!Mel
oleladys850 honest
I had just finished blacking mine out right before this thread started. I used a small flathead but think the wood is a good idea. prolly easier to save the clips if thats important to you. I hadn't planned on putting mine back so didn't matter but they bend and break pretty easy. Also, after reading posts on the subject I went to find plastic dip but 2 auto stores later they didnt have it and had heard of it but didnt know where to get it ,so maybe a good idea to call on that first. I used trim paint and it came out sweet . No idea how long it will hold up but its all temporary anyways the tabs on the bottom of my grill had been busted off and previous owner had a screw holding it there lolEnjoy.
