True Swede
Hi folks..I've been driving with a rattling noise from the hood at low speeds for the longest. I have found the problem, but have not been able to correct it as yet. The rubber on the hood latches located at both sides of the front of the engine compartment is worn out, so it's now metal against metal. I tried readjusting the height of the latches and also tried to put some silicon where the rubber used to be, neither leading to any success. Obviously I could buy two new latches, but at $75 a pop I figured there must be a cheaper way around it. If there's anyone who have had the same problem, and also solved it, or knows where I can get new (good used) latches at a lower price I would be happy to hear.Btw, it's a 1998 S70 T5/True Swede
lookforjoe
Here's the parts listing - isn't the buffer a separate piece (#8)? Or do oyu mean that your locks are just worn out? On mine I just lowered the latch so that it pulled the hood down against the buffer, and got rid of my horrible rattle.

I did try to lower the latch but it didn't do the trick, it still rattled. I think the buffer (rubber) on the latch you are talking about is what I am missing and is causing the noice. Sorry if I am unclear about what I mean. Maybe someone more savvy can explain better./True Swede

lookforjoe
Right - I missed that when looking @ the lock assy. The OP should be able to get just 17a & put it back on his original latch - can't be more than 5 bucks for that...
True Swede
talking about this puppy?God i love Vadisedit: oops i covered the name of it. its called the buffer.....I still think we are talking about different things here. If you look at #21 and simply follow the horizontal line to the right all the way to the middle (the U-shape) of the locking mechanism there is supposed to be a rubber piece at the bottom of this U. It's where the lock "grabs on" to the hood and the rubber prevents metal to metal contact.Hope this helps helping me .

The underside of the latch will have the hood "U" pulled tightly against it.
lookforjoe
98's don't have that buffer on the side of the lock - thos catalog pics must be 850, I guess; this is what is there - ..which is what you were actually referring to, correct?Does you hood have these?..looks like there is no way round it - you'll have to get new locks. You could PM "ChupaCabra" - see if the wrecked '98 he's picking up still has them intact, or maybe even the rubber bits could be removed (from the wreck) if not... True Swede
Lookforjoe, you are spot on.. Finally someone got my shady description of the problem . It's the rubber where the yellow arrow is pointing that's missing. I'll try ChupaCabra. Funny enough I actually contacted him yesterday about something else. Thanks a lot for that tip.. Does someone else know where these can be bought for a decent penny if ChubaCabra doesn't have them?/True Swede
