ok if the angle gear and prop. shaft, steering rack power steering pump issue's wasn't enough!

had misfire on cylinder 2 changed plugs changed coil on cylinder 2 changed remaining boots all four cylinders checked each coil carefully. now when rolling to a stop idle shutters exhaust smells rotten eggs so no reading on 1st o2 sensor replaced both 02 sensors, still have stumbling idle and pending code for camshaft position sensor. (hate to change as code has not set just pending)

any ideas?

timing belt was replaced 35,000 ago throttle body was cleaned then also

also VVT control valve has been replaced. (variable valve timing control valve)

has 178,000 on XC

lol...ive been here!! ive had a few cars do this after repairing the problem and the only way to get them to run normally was to simply unhook the battery for a few minutes....give it a try, after all its free!! it seems to reboot the system and reset all the parameters. when the car gets so far out of whack, i dont think it knows which end is up so to speak.

Thanks Guys!

did disconnect battery for 15 mins. went for ride came to a stop engine started the stumble crap and check engine. so went to friends at Lovering volvo in concord NH and after waiting four and half hours riding around in 07 XC they called to say it was done. Mass airflow sensor was bad and caused a few false codes to be thrown out, hope 02 sensors weren't false readings :o

any ways thanks again guy's we can add this one to caulk board to help others in the future! ;)

If you are getting a rotten egg smell from the exhuast, your cat is clogged. It is possible it is clogged to the point that is causing a drastic drop in engine preformance.

It could have set o2 sensor codes because the cat isn't doing its job.

rotten egg smell is only when you come to idle stop and it decides to do this stumbleing idle crap.

would it still apply?

should I remove cat to see if its loose or blocked?

and thanks for the reply!

alrite, just had this problem on a customers car and thought id pass this on to you. first, dealer installed o2 sensors, one at a time. same problem, so there is a bulletin that adds a pigtail to both 02's to prevent oil contamination in the connectors. the oil is from a bad ptc valve. if you unplug the elec. connector, it will probably be full of oil, and this travels down the harness and clogs the source air supply for the 02 sensors, either one or in my case, both.

solution: replace intake tube, clean 02 connectors and install the pigtails and see if that does the trick. you might need both 02's but i would try without first if it were my money.

hey Thanks for the info!

I had just replaced both 02 sensors so I dout this would apply as I say no oil in the connectors we I replaced them. I am waiting for a new coil to arrive and the snow and rain/freezing rain to stop then I will have some time to investigate cat and possible second bad coil.

Thanks again I will post progress when I get into to it.(the XC is not a daily driver so its not pressing but I will be selling it as soon as I get it 100%)

Actually rotten egg smell usually means your hydracarbons are off the scale meaning it's fat or rich indicating your misfire. Just for shits and giggles have you run a compression test on that cylinder?

Oh sheet!

No have not run compression test on #2 well do that!

why thought would it be random only happens every so often more than not but we have not gotten misfire code again since replacing the coil on #2 we o2 pre cat not reading so replaced both sensors and than stumble so went to dealer to have them hook to vida as we only have snap- on to read and see. they said maf replaced it ran awesome till the next day when I ran short distance to the store and it started again.

ok new update same problem!

checked compression all five cylinders are fine, car did its thing today so here is just what happened and what I did.

drove 18 miles stopped 15mins restarted all fine for 2.5 miles came to stop sign started the stumble and than check engine light.

drove 14 more miles on highway ran great at all speeds rolled to stop stumble whole car shakes as the engine stumbles.

got home drove into garage never shut off the car so far, removed one by one each coil pak wire no change was a little smoother in fact each time I removed a wire. had new coils to replace remaining three so I did just that, exhaust was smelling of richness some what rotten egg so I put on lift and removed exhaust pre cat no change.

dropped car down shut off restarted and it was back to normal idle.

??????????????? any guesses I do not have cel so could not find codes today.
