2000 Xc Ready To Burn!

What's funny is you stated that it seemed to smooth out when removing 1 coil at a time. So I'm sitting here thinking that perhaps the CMP sensor is not giving a strong enough signal to trigger the proper KV's needed to fire the coil. Then I went back to the top and started to re-read the entire post. Your 1st post stated that you had a CMP sensor code?

I know I have run into this on the 7 series already where the car will die. You unplug either an injector or a plug wire and the car will start . Replace the hall sensor and back to normal. I have never run into this issue yet on the 5 cyl stuff though.

Has the CEL ever flashed while driving?

Also one more thing that is simple to try. I know you disconnected the battery but you need to disconnect both terminals, touch and hold the leads together for say 15 seconds. Reconnect the positive terminal then the negative. Then using the key(not the key fob) lock and unlock the drivers door twice. I know this sounds stupid but you may want to try it?

No I do not believe it has.

I personally feel I have exhausted all my,as I call it "fly by wire" knowledge. Perhaps a professional is in order? Or perhaps another knowledgeable mind that is capable of driving the car and being hands on??

ok new update same problem!

checked compression all five cylinders are fine, car did its thing today so here is just what happened and what I did.

drove 18 miles stopped 15mins restarted all fine for 2.5 miles came to stop sign started the stumble and than check engine light.

drove 14 more miles on highway ran great at all speeds rolled to stop stumble whole car shakes as the engine stumbles.

got home drove into garage never shut off the car so far, removed one by one each coil pak wire no change was a little smoother in fact each time I removed a wire. had new coils to replace remaining three so I did just that, exhaust was smelling of richness some what rotten egg so I put on lift and removed exhaust pre cat no change.

dropped car down shut off restarted and it was back to normal idle.

??????????????? any guesses I do not have cel so could not find codes today.

FWIW, I recently changed the plugs on my 99' XC, everything went smooth, was extra carefull, etc. What I noticed was that the wires for the coil packs were brittle (the protective wrapping), and I ended up vacuuming a bunch of that crap off of the engine. After starting to make sure everything was fine, I put it all back together, then head out - and 5 minutes later, I'm getting a CEL, and misfire on cylinder 4 (after many threads, #4 seems to be a common culprit).

Solution was the following - the cover on the engine over the coil packs has a bolt pretty close to #4 - when I reinstalled, it ended up compressing the wire against the top of the engine - after a little heat (from what I can tell), this caused a small portion to be exposed, shorting out #4 and causing rough idle and misfiring. I electrical taped it as a temporary solution, and it's running fine.

I'm trying to find where I can get some new coil pack wires, but it seems that every site out there doesn't know that the V70XC in 99 has coil packs. Sure wish it had spark plugs, cuz I can get those wires!

Take a looksey, see if this helps -
