Tranny Options Besides Lvl 10 And M56 For 850?

Searching says level 10 is expensive and hit-or-miss on quality, and I says manual gearbox isn't an option. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience / ideas / stories / etc.

I'm interested in things that would allow me to get past the 300-350HP limit our stock boxes have, and specifically don't involve a clutch. Can be rebuild options, or other hardware (I heard a rumor that evo tranny's could be swapped onto T5 S40's, for example). Please include price and source if possible. As a last resort I'd consider a manual box if it brought something amazing like (real) AWD to the table, but I'd really prefer to stick with auto.

Custom mounts are OK, custom driveshafts are not (unless someone knows a source for them) - ditto with flywheels. As for rebuilds I don't want to cold call a local / generic / whatever transmission shop and drop $3k and hope it holds to 400HP - I don't have the time and energy for the I'm dumb factor involved there. I'm looking for something that is either guaranteed or has been used before successfully.

Don't try and sell me on the M56 swap - I have many reasons for not wanting stick, including:

I don't want to have to re-do my kickpods for clutch pedal | I don't want to drive stick in Orlando traffic | I like torque converters | other people sometimes drive my car, only one of them knows stick | left knee issues + this is my DD

If I can't find anything I'll throw on a turboback and keep everything else stock, and work on one of my other cars or my dad's boat or something. If I can, then I'll be considering doing more to the 850 (especially if I can get a retune for my RICA I got from jross - I've heard he has disappeared). I just don't want to be considering mods which would lead to a rebuild (new rods) and that whole power level, and then be risking failure with the gearbox - I'll just put my money elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

maybe I should clarify.

If I can find said tranny, I'll be considering headwork + S60R manifold + 19T & Nitrous / T3 , on a rebuilt bottom end. Something that can hang with some of my friend's cars (450-520 WHP eclipses, M3's, M5's, etc). Not beat them, but at least catch up at the next redlight.

If I can't find said tranny, I'll work on the Jag or the Vette or my dad's scarab, and not monkey around with the 850, and just use it for getting to class and road trips and hauling the family around.

I'm not worried about blowing my tranny with a 15G and RICA. (On an unrelated note, I am worried about getting a RICA tune since neither George nor John are returning my e-mails).

Yeah well, that's depressing.

and true.

and probably what will happen.

However, if someone knows of something, I'm still interested in hearing. I like having a fast DD and the sleeper factor of a wagon can't be argued with (the sedan's do say "Volvo" but they look somewhat sporty). Nobody's really pissed about being killed by a sportscar. Even tying with a wagon hurts.

I just don't see myself redoing my kicks to accommodate a clutch any time soon.

Thanks for the responses!

Leave the 850 as a daily.

Your FWD spinfest won't touch your buddy's 450+ whp traction mobile unless you're going 60+ and that's worthless.

agreed. 350hp automatic volvo won't work. if you don't want to drive with manual transmission then just keep killing your 15g. very quick that auto tranny will blew up.

and what traffic are talking about Orlando? It is nothing comparing to places like DC or NYC.

somewhere on this site there is a post where a guy put together a comprehensive parts list for a high horsepower auto tranny build with vendors and parts numbers. it had all the trick high horsepower parts and represented lots of research. it may take some searching and reading but you will recognize the post when you find it.

I installed a trans line bump box in my 850 about 3 years ago and its works great with the 18T beating on it.

Effectively it just ups the line pressure by about 15% to firm up the shift and hold the clutches a bit tighter.

With synthetic and a trans cooler and I've been really happy.

Hi,

About the bump box, did you place it on the cooler line ?

Can we drop the pan on our automatic transmission and have access to the valve body or the transmission must be removed?

I've seen a lot of DIY shift kit on other forums with Aisin Warner transmission.

Thanks,

Pierre

Me and my wife Angelina Jolie (Gant) would like to drop by some time to check out your dads machines.
