13 Hours Of Driving Yesterday...some Good Kills!

Hey guys,

My little brother and I had to drive to NorCal yesterday for a turnaround trip to pick up my Jeep, and we drove my brick up there. Had a few good run-ins on the ~800 mile trip!

First one was actually last week, but since you can't post kills on Turbobricks (but it's perfectly OK to talk about top speed runs in public), I thought I'd repost here!

#1: SN95 5.0L Mustang GT, manual. Afterward, I came to find out his car had intake, exhaust, H-pipe, no cats, MAF and injectors. I'm not sure I believe that's all it had...it had some impressive top end for a 5.0 and was certainly making well more than the OE 225hp. I used to drive a '91 5.0L AOD. This was a 1994 (?)...after the body change, but the last year they had the 5.0L (225hp/300tq) before switching to the 4.6L (215hp/285tq). You can tell them apart because the fender badges on the 4.6L GT's say 4.6 on them. The 5.0's don't. Anyhow...

Brick = 1

Ford = 0

#2: Honda S2K, manual. Easy kills with these now. He dropped gears next to me from ~70mph. I went 3/4 throttle and clicked the O/D off. Had multiple carlengths by ~115, but that's where I hit the wall as I'm fighting the O/D shift again. Autos on the freeway...ugh!!!

Brick = 2

Honda = 0

#3: 350Z ragtop. More of the same, but certainly faster than the S2K! May have been auto. I don't care, I'm in a friggin Brick. I deserve props! LOL!

Brick = 3

Nissan = 0

#4: Porsche Boxster. 2nd gen. Non-S. Yuppie businessman. I paced him for a few seconds, then sped up. He dropped behind me and rode my bumper. Did my usual "3/4 throttle and drop out of O/D" and walked away pretty easily. By 110 he let off and was well behind.

Brick = 4

Porsche = 0

#5: 2007 Charger SRT-8. I know, I know...I figured nobody would buy this one. But I did have a witness, as my brother and I were driving side by side and talking on FRS radios. This guy comes blazing up to a pocket of traffic in a black SRT8. Badges plainly visible, HEMI badge on fender, SRT bodywork. I get next to him and purge a little boost. He looks over, finds the gap, and takes off. I slam the throttle and tuck in behind him. After a couple seconds, I see a black puff from his exhaust and the car is audible OVER my catless 3". I KNOW he went full throttle. I was ON HIS BUMPER from ~70 to ~110. He hit the next pocket of traffic and weaved in and out, then threw on his hazards. That's when I stopped and let him drive recklessly. If it's a clear road, I'll give it a go...but weaving through traffic I will NOT do.

Anyhow...it WAS an SRT8, he WAS racing, and I WAS able to hang DEAD EVEN from 70 to 110. I have only two explanations for this.

First, I'm not sure if those are available in manual, auto, or both. If it was a manual, I am pretty sure he did not think he had to downshift to dust me, so he started the run in whatever gear he was in. Then when he realized I was somewhat worthy, he punched it, but it was too late.

Second, it was clear that past 110, he would have killed me. I'm redlining in 3rd, and O/D won't kick in at full throttle, so I'm basically stuck unless I let off the gas to allow the trans to shift. But if I let off the gas, I would have not been able to keep up...so I would have been dead either way at that point.

However, considering the power that car has, and how much he spent for it...I think the Brick earned the hash mark on the scoreboard!

Brick = 1/2

Dodge Hemi SRT8 = 1/2

That was about it. All the other ricers on the way were not notable. :)

My Brick:

'95 940T; 196,000 miles; Automagic

15G @ ~13.5psi/3" turbo-back mandrel/hollow cat (it blew platinum chunks out the tailpipe, so it was an easy mod...lol!)/browntops/ipd cam/avalanche cam gear @ +2/fuel and ignition chips...I think that's it!

The Charger SRT-8 came in tip-tronic, not manual. A buddy of mine has one, and his only complaint is that he wishes it was manual.

I don't know what happened with the SRT-8, but those things are beastly. With just a couple of bolt-ons, my friend put out close to 430rwhp, and that was before he got some more mods.

Nice. Glad you able to serve some swedish meatball to those cars :lol: . The SRT8 would definitely pull away from you on a straight away stretch. Suprise those 350Z and S2K had weak top end even against a wagon.

I had 600 miles trip over the weekend and had one run in with a brand new A6 3.2. He couldn't shake me off from 80 mph roll and we let off after hitting 130mph as we coming to traffic and I was slowly gaining inch by inch :P

I need to install my bigger turbo as soon I can pick up the damn package from UPS :lol:

Thanks guys!

I had a decent exhaust leak when I set off for this trip (pre-turbo, cracked exhaust manifold). My GF fired it up this morning to go run some errands, and it sounds HORRIBLE now. I'm parking the Brick for a week or so to replace the manifold, install my 31x18x3" intercooler, and put in the wideband and APEXi SAFC II. Should be even more fun when she's back together next week! :)

Pretty sure the s2k wasnt goin. Ive raced many of them modded and not modded and riden in a couple. they are plenty fast even stock, they run low 14's bone stock all day long, and bottom end is the slowest part of those cars. I had my car tuned at 20lbs w intake and exhaust and they still pulled away at top end. So if you did pull on him then either 1) he was a bad driver or 2) he was playing with you. 285hp a light car and a 9k redline wont be taken down too easy high end. But good job on the other killls! nobody expects the volvo lol

IIRC, S2000 only have 240bhp and revise to 237bhp under the new hp rating

Actually, I torment S2K's on a regular basis. They are kinda slow. Especially when you run from an RPM where you're already in boost, and you're making about double the torque as them. Same with RSX-S, Type-R Integras, etc. These are easy kills unless they are built.

And in the high end (rather, high speeds), you need more TORQUE to punch through the air. Not horsepower. Torque is the measure of how much power an engine puts out. Horsepower is essentially a measure of how efficiently the engine makes that torque, and is calculated from the TQ mathematically.

S2000 = ~240hp and ~150tq. Laughable.

They also weigh in at 2,855 lbs. Compared to 3150 for the 940.

That's about the same as 2 passengers worth of difference (295 lbs), and that's NOT nearly enough to make up for the lack of torque in the 2000.

EDIT...they now pack a ground-thumping 162 lb-ft of torque! What's that, about 110 to the wheels? I'm probably making around 240tq to the wheels (275 crank?) based on dynos of similar-modded LH2.4 cars. hehe.

there is no comparison of an s2k and a type r and rsx-s. Im jus saying I know they are quick personally and its def a feat to take them down on the highway. And IDk wat gear u were in or ne thing or wat ur car puts down but S2ks arent bad.

Not sure why I thought they had more, none the less they are quick cars...

They are OK, just no match for raised boost and a wide open exhaust. They are meant for twisty roads and top-down spirited motoring, not blistering quarter miles.

A bolt-on RSX-S will easily hang with a stock S2K. I've seen them BEAT S2K's.

Look how close this is...

As for gears...I'm in an automatic. :)
