I've always wanted to shoot an AK. I was considering an AR-15, but it would end up costing way too much. Plus, hunting with a .223 doesn't make sense. The 7.62x39mm wouldn't make a bad deer hunting round out of an AK. One of my buddy's dad hunts with an SKS. .30-06 still pawns though.

Thousands of people hunt with 223.

Are you referring to varmint hunting, or deer/elk hunting? .223 is marginal for deer, and completely out of the question for elk. You're not even allowed to hunt elk with anything below a .270 in KY. Most people I know who hunt deer never go below a .243...most prefer the .270, .300 mag, .308, or .30-06. Unless you can score a perfect head or kill zone shot with a .223 on a small to medium deer, it's inhumane as it will escape, but possibly spend the next few days bleeding to death. I considered the AR setup in 6.8mm SPC and .458 SOCOM from Rock River Arms, but decided against it. Generally speaking, people don't buy ARs specifically to hunt with. I'm still considering a 24" slug barrel for the Benelli when I get it, but I'd rather spend a little more and get an actual rifle in .30-06.

I thought you were speaking in more general terms. 223 makes prairie dogs do back flips. ;)

So I've heard. :) It'd sure be fun to take one out and pop up some rabbits and squirrels, but here we're not allowed to use centerfire ammunition on small game. But at least we are allowed to use rifles on deer and elk. Some states require using slugs. I just recently discovered that using buckshot is illegal for any kind of hunting...deer and elk have to be hunted with slugs. Can't have buckshot on you if you're hunting small game, but unless you wanna vaporize a rabbit, buckshot's out of the question anyway.
