This Is Really Starting To Piss Me Off

Ok motor mount, sounds good. So check this out, i'm totally on the verge of flipping my nut:

First off let me say my indie is a great guy, knowledgeable about volvos, been really really good to me and my fam over the years. Problem is he's out of town till the 4th :( and the guy in charge of the shop, while also a good guy, isn't a mechanic and mainly deals with invoices and such so it's basically him and a couple grease monkeys in the back.

So i went up there today to demonstrate this popping sound and to generally see what was going on. We got in the car and the first thing i noticed is that A.) it took awhile to start (didn't do that before) and B.) when it did start, it was running WAY sluggishly, i'd say without really driving it for a good while, it's running worse than before.

I actually got the sound to pop for him, once with the wheel cut and then a couple more times by hitting the brakes hard. So at least he heard it. BUT when i brought it in, i left them a note detailing all the things i wanted them to check out (cause i have a bad memory) and one of the things was the brakes. Recently they've been real spongy-almost scary spongy and today they still were. They checked the pads, calipers and rotors and said they were fine, i turned the car off, stepped on the brake pedal and started it and it BARELY moved... Brake Booster perhaps? I asked them to look into that, clearly they didn't. <_<

BUT you wanna know the REAL kicker!?

so after driving it for a bit i parked it again and decided to pop the hood as long as i was there with him (again he's not a mechanic, i kinda feel sorry for the guy he's totally swamped by these pushy hamptons people) and there was FRICKIN' WHITE STEAM shooting off the thermostat housing where the upper rad hose connects :o:angry:  . The hose is kinda old, but no signs of failure until now. The steam was def. coolant smelling and CHRIST, if i had driven it outta there trusting they CHECKED that sh*t like their supposed to and had that hose blow on me I woulda killed someone (there aren't enough emoticons to describe how i'm feeling now):blink::wacko::unsure::(:o:angry:  but that's kinda close. Plus there was oily nasties all over the engine, top of the block, all around the distributer cap even a big oily stain on top of the ECU box and the relay holder on top of the radiator that were not there before!! It looks like my engine overheated and puked superheated sludgies out of every damn hole, seal, gasket and dongle and then recondensed them everywhere when it cooled idk.

They're gonna put it back up on the lift first thing in the AM and recheck the control arms, the brake booster/system and one other thing i can't remember at the moment (i told you my memory was bad and I'm like so totally emotional now (wah)).

I'll also now tell them to check the rear (right che, it's the rear?) motor mount and I probably will have to do the tranny mount (while i shifted gears from reverse to drive I got a sort of twisting torquey lurch to the left that also wasn't there before) at some point, but with my super slow RMS leak, all that stuff is nasty and that oil can't be good for the rubber in the mounts anyway.

WTF am i right guys? is there anything else you can think of i should have them do (I almost don't want them to touch it till my main man gets back, he woulda totally taken those techs for a dance in the six sided ring of fire had he been there)

So that and a ballcock day at the office = boo day for this hombre. Time for some brown liquor and then off to play with some firetrucks B) that should make me feel SLIGHTLY better B).

I am so not feeling sorry for you. I just can't help it, there must be more than one Volvo indie in your area. If the mechanic you trust is on vacation, shop around or DIY.

You don't need Snap on tools, but they are nice, and you don't need a lift. Very few of us shade tree machanics have either. We do have a floor jack and stands and a small set of mis matched tools and manage to get by,

You car is in a heap of hurt. The suspension seems like it is the least of your troubles. I would tell the garage to park the car until the mechanic gets back from vacation, or tow it to a better location. Oil and antifreeze all over the engine bay could be a disaster.

If you have no tools or space wait till someone you trust gets back.

I know i don't need snap on's just kidding and i already have a pretty good collection of tools–all kinds of sockets, box wrenches, extensions, universal joint, torx's (one security torx bit) unicorn spanners, gremlin catchers you name it I just don't have any specialty tools like a spring compressor, code reader and stuff like that but that's not a big deal, and my garage is totally full (86 alfa romeo graduate, pulling the tranny on that this weekend to get it rebuilt and an 84 CJ-7 which will soon be going off to get a new body/rebuild, plus a ton of parts from my 95 318i that fought a tree and lost anyone want em?) so that leaves me with a blue stone gravel driveway to do my work and like i said hauling the floor jack in that crap is something of a pain. I have no problem doing many jobs myself on the car but recently i've been really pressed for free time (between work & the fire dept. i hardly have time to drink!) and with 4 inches of snow on the ground no way am i dealing with driveway tomfoolery.

Now that i've cooled off somewhat, the engine doesn't look as bad as i might have made it seem (i was just heated over a couple things and the car was the snot icing on my poop cake). I know what a fubared engine looks like, and I wouldn't say my car is in a heap of hurt by any means.

The garage found no play in the control arms so i'm having them check the rear mount, change the upper rad hose and then i'm getting it back, putting the jeep in the driveway (more rust ain't gonna hurt her :) , putting the volvo up on 4 stands in the garage so i can really just start banging this work out. (it's also hard as it's my daily driver, getting home from work at 7, then having to disassemble, repair and then reassemble all in one go, at least now i can do it in stages and not have to remove the same parts over and over and over, XC70 is doing just fine for now).

I'm not mechanically disinclined by any means, it's just the shop can get parts the next day for the same price i'd pay online before shipping, can pull my codes (autozone is too far away, code reader may have to be in my future) and i end up paying less for incidentals like oil, filters etc, then again, i don't charge myself for labor  i just get yelled at for not paying enough attention to my old lady <_< . I'm going to pay my bill for the service, order new struts (i know those need doing) and related components and start there doing the work myself. If i find myself stuck somewhere along the way, i know who i'm gonna turn to for help :)........ jesus  (wait i mean VS) :D

I guess it's just time to sack up, grow up, get dirty and know that i'm doing the job right the first time. :)

Check the rear engine mount. If you pop off the passenger side wheel liner you can get a good look at it.

What a good idea, but I would think that is the front engine mount. B)

The front mount is hydraulic and cannot be inspected via the wheel well. Its the mount at the rear of the engine. IE rear engine mount but on a Volvo is actually on the side of the subframe. They tend to fail and clunk on gear changes and stops.

Quite confusing isn't it? We are talking about the same engine pad (8631702-1) that is just above the control arm on the passenger side. Just move the little fender flap out of the way and there it is. Mine broke into 2 pieces at about 122K miles. Dealer price was around $110.

But, that is the front of the engine, the rear of the engine bolts to the tranny...

Except there is no mount on the transmission side of the engine.

You guys are NOT talking about the same mount. I think.

Hey bro, sounds like the same issue I had on my 96 wagon. I was the not only the bad struts but the strut mounts that were so noisy.

The rubber grommets wore down and there was a bit of play that sounded like a Cuban salsa band with 50 maracas.

Hope it works out for you.

Might be a long shot, but I had a "DUNG" type of sound coming from my passenger side a various times. Sounded kind of springy. Turns out it was my parking brake shoes on the right rear. They dislodged from the spring and were sticking a bit. Cleaned up and reset, now no more noise. Like I said, could be a long shot.

Hey Bro,

spongy brakes still? Have you replaced your booster vac line? I found that sucker the other day (bad shape too) and swapped it out with some 10mm silicone from stylin motors. It's plenty heavy.

nah, was going to look into that, where is it by the ABS module? So i ended up just doing the control arm on the passengers side, i'll do the other side with my struts in a couple weeks. And half of the clunk is gone (it's not the parking brakes shoes, i've given that a major inspection/adjustment, plus it's coming from the front.) So when i'm backing up cutting the wheel, that clunk is gone, now i just get it with the wheel cut, turning left and going forward, so it's gotta be the struts. Car feels much much firmer now even with only one new control arm and tom's endlinks, once i do the other arm and the struts, springs and spring seats i'm sure she'll feel like this biotch:

BTW, what's up with being unable to buy OEM volvo "sport" springs. I've only seen one type of spring by volvo for 850's. without going aftermarket, how do they expect us R owners to replace our suspension?

Nice ride man  I thought you'd be a lot uglier ;)  JK

Yeah booster line attatches to a huge white nipple on the bottom of the brake booster, then snakes through under the airbox and battery up to the bottom of the TB opposite (on bottom) the vac tree. It could be leaking.

If your spring isn't cracked or something there's no reason to replace it. The springs don't wear out.
