Boost On 93 854?

I am interested in anything that I can do to spice up my 93 854. I have about $1500 to spare for this project. I am not looking for anything monumental, and I understand that with my high-compression engine that I can't expect too much.

I see a lot of tacoma people (the other group I hang out with) who do turbo setus for their inline-4 2rz engines for under $1500 and have great results at around 7-8psi...

Is there a turbo setup I can throw together for around $1500? Again, I would be happy with 5 psi... Just something to spice it up!

NOS is out of the question, please do not suggest this.

I'm a big truck modder, and when it comes to my Tacoma (V6) I've got the TRD supercharger... I'm a big believer that you can only do so much N/A... Boost is where the performance is at.

But again, I know nothing beyond basic maintenance regarding these volvo L5 engines... If anyone can offer some assistance, I'd be greatful.

To give you some background, I've done most of the stage0 work such as plugs, cap, etc. I'm gettings some brembo brakes and steel braided lines (already ordered). I don't really want to do the ECU upgrade w/o boost.

Again, thanks for you patience... I'm looking for something nice to spice up my nightly pleasure-drives... But nothing to exotic. Reliability is crucial. thanks again!

I'm sure you would get alot of responses to your questions, but the simple fact is that no one here has bothered trying to give their N/A a turbo kit.

You will hear to go ahead and sell your car and get a turbo. (Wow, that sounds so easy  ) Truthfully, I think you would be much better of starting with a turbo already on your car.

If you are REALLY serious about doing this, then I think it'll come out to be more than $1,500. But come back with some more questions and I and others will be glad to help...

selling my car for a turbo'd car isn't an option. If I had to sell, I'd probably end up in a s/c'd truck again, lol.

Also, in order for me to do that, I'd have to sell the 854 before I could buy anything else, which leaves me w/o a daily-driver for a while... And then I lose all the money I've put into it so-far.

I have personally helped some tacoma people that have done turbo installs for under $1500... It can be done.

Can someone give me at least a parts list of what I would need? Do I need a seperate manifold, or will the turbo bolt onto the stock manifold? Downpipe, obviously. Any recommendations for a good turbo? Is a t3/t4 too much? Is there something that will bolt on better? Anything needed computer-side? Any ideas on what the stock injectors and pump can handle? I know I needed some 318cc injectors for the truck when I did the S/C... Do the volvo injectors have a better margin on em?

I understand this isn't something many people have done... But I really want to do this. And selling for a stock-turbo isn't what I wanna do.

Any tips? Even if it's just for what to look for in a turbo for these motors?

i can be done for cheap if there are mass kits.

Buy a wrecked turbo and harvest all the parts :) Otherwise, get a turbo, order hoses, get the manifold and downpipe, and then get the gear to do self tuning (which few turbo guys here even do) and start from there. But that will be more then 1500

okay, well can we get a parts list going, then?

A wideband O2 is a must, for tuning.

Turbo (obviously)

Downpipe

Manifold (is this required on a volvo?)

I have an intercooler laying next to me... I figure I get it working without the intercooler then worry about that later.

so what else am I missing?

13G or 15G turbocharger.

Downpipe with conical style (or custom).

Intercooler.

Intercooler hoses.

Boost control solenoid (optional but preferable).

ECU for LPT car (97 850 GLT) preferably.

Turbo exhaust manifold.

Injectors from an LPT car (sorry, don't know color or p/n).

Lots of wires and vacuum hose, etc...

Drill bit sufficient for drilling the block, hardware for splitting the oil pressure sender outlet into two outlets (one will be oil pressure sender and one will be the oil feed for the turbo).

Proper PCV plumbing from a turbo car.

Honestly, it should not be too difficult... Also, most of this stuff can probably be improvised for less money, if you're ingenuitive. Find a turbo car, study EVERYTHING that is different from your NA car closely, and think of what needs to be done on your car, and how. There's no handbook for doing this, so it's largely going to be common sense. I guess I listed a couple of things to look at, but by no means limit yourself to what is mentioned in this thread.

think A stand along ECU will be need or the ECU + plus wiring from a turbo 850. So will need gauges to monitor it all. As well as new injevtors I think. I think you will still need all the piping, plus, the boost control stuff. A stand alone unit will be needed or else all the turbo parts. If you are going to go through all the work to turbo an NA 850 motor it would be worth your while to either do it, and then offer a kit or, supercharge it, (about the same about of work) and then let everyone know the results. (making new trails) The work to turbo vs. just buying a turbo is not worth it unless you are going to make it a production kit. Look into SCing (if you have the money) or into selling buying a cheap temp car (500 or less) and buying a turbo. Then if you want the manual you have you can do the swap for about 1000 labor included.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions ask, cause I am typing this drunk and it may not make sense so I will clarify any questions.

GOOD LUCK.

Todd
