2000 S80, What Should I Look For?

We got profit sharing checks yesterday and I was already trying to get into a car so I started looking for a newer used Volvo. I currently have a 96 850 and a 97 960. The 2000 S80 looks like the car I want to get next sooooo, what should I look for or be concerned about. I found one just down the road so I'm gonna look it over and test drive it in about an hour!

thanks!

I have a 99 s80T6. I would never buy another one of these cars...at least not one made before 2005. I've had electrical gremlins, a tranny replacement and several other problems. The ETM software was done as a warranty and the tranny cost me 2500.00 dollars to replace. It's been 10,000 miles since the replacement and it's doing well. The inline 6 is a very strong motor. The only issue I had with it was an oil leak at I think the breather box, which cost about 200 dollars to fix. I also had a turbo tube leak that was fixed at this time which was about 100 dollars. Now for the confusing stuff.

I own my car...not a bank. I don't want any more payments. I've put about 2000 dollars in upgrades to the suspension, tires and wheels, as well as an ECU reflash through IPD. By the time it's all said and done, I'll have about 5 to 6 thousand in it and that will be all. It is maintained very well and, although I got beat up pretty bad on here for saying this, this is the fastest and most comfortable car I've ever driven. I really do like the car and have no intentions of getting rid of it.

Again, I'd stay away from anything prior to 2005 and I'd even go so far as to check ebay for an 05 s80. There are usually some there and they're inexpensive.

IPD is a GREAT resource for great parts. Chris DeLano is very knowledgeable and will be glad to help with aftermarket parts which significantly improve the s80's performance.

the first generation of S80's are pick and choose on troubles. i would pass on the 2000. get a 2006+; they are damn comfy cars.. they are also very expensive on labor for repairs; the components are packed in mighty tight. however they are so few after market parts for the first generation, the second generations are even fewer, although there are a few out there now. nothing wrong with the T6 motor. the transmission is weak in stock form for the engine. i replaced one at around 110k miles. there can be flaky electrical problems without a stable set of firmware.

you have a couple of the older cars so you will know the difference. i wish i never bought my S70, even thought i bought it for a winter car; i never put it back on the road after driving it for a months while i was upgrading the S80. once i get rid of it, i've got my eye on a new shelby, or bmw - something with lots of OTS upgrade parts.

dmelviØØ7 is a volvo tech (i'm pretty sure) you can take his advise on repair problems.

the S80 is great if you can afford to pay the bills. if you don't have any money just pass on it. highend cars are always expensive one way or another. i love my S80 and have spent much more on upgrades than repairs over all. i've lost a starter motor, strut mounts, and a transmission due to normal wear and tear.

you can click on my [GARAGE] signature link to see what i've done with it.

Aww come on, you know you're probably "one of" good T6's out there... lol..

haha, true. i park next to a bone stock T6 at work sometimes but only because it's a close parking space. very humdrum look, especially in what looks like red to me.

@systek: if you get any kind of bad vibe from an S80; just run away. there are some good ones out there. they're not easy to find.

family looked into getting an '00-'02 S80 for a longgggg time. then we started talking to a few dealers and mechanics we trust and they advised us to turn and run like most of the guys here are saying just b/c although there are a few good ones out there, most will most likely end up bringing you some trouble. they proceeded to highly recommend the S70 (850 too) and we ended up buying a '98 n/a, a '00 n/a (sold since not b/c of trouble, but b/c of color), and a '00 glt.

to back up the forgotten one, my cousin drives like an '05ish S40 and she likes it a lot except for the lack of power - its a n/a.

btw we had a 960 too until we found out the thing had a hairline crack in the engine that was diagnosed as most likely coming from the factory? (volvo of warren sold us the thing used though and apparently didnt pick up on it ... needless to say we havent dealt with them since) then proceeded to get an S90 - was probably my mom's favorite car except for the fact that RWD here in western PA doesnt do well. doubt u want to get an S90 since u already have a '97 960 and they are basically the same car but the S90, like the S70, gets my props too - the leather on those was UNBELIEVABLE.

I don't know if you guys get different versions shipped to the states than we get in Scandinavia... doesn't sound like "our" Volvo's... :)

My S80 diesel (2.5tdi) has 256000km on the odometer and still works like a charm. Parts that has been replaced has been replaced because of normal wear and tear (shocks, brakes, tyres etc.).

Transmission works great too! In fact, most 8 year old S80 diesels have between 250k - 500k kilometers on the meter up here since we have long distances between cities and the transmission normally lasts until you're closer to 500k kilometers. That's why I really don't understand the scepticism against S80:s of that age..? It's a very common car here and a very reliable one!

was just looking at cars at the wrecker so i could get parts and sell em online. There are so many s80s from the early years that have (in my estimate) 4k worth of damage and there not worth to fix. There 6k to buy, so im assuming that means the demand for them isnt alot or the insurance company knows what pos they are. Sorry to owners of them. funny thing is that i didnt see any 2001 v70 t5 autos, but there also a pos.
