Yes, A Wheel Question...but A New One...i Think

I have a 1995 850 Turbo that I just bought of a guy because the reverse gear doesn't work. It has all the performance parts to basically make it an R, except the interior and it for the price of the IPD ECU that was in it. A nice surprise was that it came with 1996 R wheels (they are Volan's...I think those were 1996) that I swapped onto my main driver.

So, here is my problem.

Once I get all the parts I want off the car I am going to have Pick-N-Pull come and get it. But I don't want to waste my 1995 turbo rims so while at Pick-N-Pull the other day for a bumper for the '93 850 I grabbed a five lug steel wheel with the markings 41/2Jx14x25. Since there was only 1 850 in the Volvo section and everything else was either a 940, 740 or 240 I am assuming I grabbed it from one of those. I got it home and put it on the car and it seems to work fine on the rear but not the front. I am going to go buy some washers and see if I can't make them work for the front since it only needs to be able to be pulled up onto the flatbed tow truck...it won't be driven.

Okay, so not really a problem yet, as long as I can build out to the wheel with washers.

My question is...what is the smallest wheel that will fit over the front brake calipers? Can those be had from a 240, 740 or 940?

I just bought another car, maybe for parts, maybe to get registered again and may have the same problem. It is a 1995 850 T-5R in Creme Yellow and I am assuming the wheels are worth something. If I decide to pull all the performance parts I will want to do the same thing when Pick-N-Pull comes to get it. (the guy I bought it from installed just about everything available from IPD onto it down to the side markers, aluminum lock pulls and intermittent washer relay. He said that he put about $14K into it total...drove about 200K as his work car for the last 10 years. $14K might be a little bit high but regardless, there is a lot of good stuff on that car. Oddly he didn't change any of the engine mounts but who am I to complain; I got the car for less than the value of the wheels...)

Okay, sorry for the babbling but I am kind of excited. I have always wanted an R and now I not only have two of them but have two in Creme Yellow. I am sure I am not the first guy to own two of them but still it makes me proud. Needless to say, it is a bit too loud for me so either the girlfriend will get it (she loves the colour) or I will sell them.

So, basically, what are the minimum size markings I should be looking for on steel wheels at Pick-N-Pull in order to fit over the front calipers of these two 1995 850 turbos?

thanks

I don't know if I read what you wrote correctly but are you considering sending a yellow to the JY??? Let me know if you decide to go that route I would be interested in some parts B)

Yes, you read correctly. I may be sending my newly purchased Creme Yellow to the junk yard. It has 200K on it, hasn't been registered in two years, has been sitting for over a year and has some tickets on it (previous owner said he has at least one for no registeration). I am just not sure if it is worth resurrecting but also am not sure I am interested in turning it into a parts car. I would probably be more interested in selling the whole thing to someone. I got it for cheap enough that I wouldn't mind passing the savings on to someone else since I am going to be taking all the aftermarket IPD stuff for another car of mine.

I can't see your signature line from this screen; where are you located? What kind of parts are you looking for? The interior is almost perfect (haven't looked at it in good daylight yet but looks pretty darn good so far).

why did you post two threads about the same car?

also if the 15"s dont fit make sure they dont have the 302 rotors you mentioned one had all sorts of ipd upgrades the 302 brake conversion would be one and only a coupld of 16's fit over those brakes but you could always take those brakes off and put your old brakes on the "parts" car so that the 15's would fit

I can kind of see why you would say that but the threads were about two different things...and besides, are ALL your threads about the same car? One of my threads was a question about wheels for 1995 850s, which does include this car and the other is about getting some opinions on this particular car.

The steel wheel I tried isn't even a 15...I think it is a 14, right? 41/25x14x25 is a 14" inch...well, that is the only number that seems to make sense. That wheel fit the back of the 1995 850 turbo but rubs on the front. I guess what my question boils down to is, do any of the 240, 740 or 940s have 15" steel wheel spares? A real wheel costs real money at P-N-P where as a steel wheel, 5 lug only costs $7. This all may be for not if I figure out tomorrow that I can use washers to build out to the wheel when mounted on the front in order to clear the calipers. I don't think either of the junk yard bound cars have after market rotors but I appreciate the heads up and will take a careful look before tossing them. Actually, that makes me think...I could always pull the front calipers off in order to make the wheels fit. THe tow guy only needs to be able to roll it onto the flatbed, it doesn't need to have working breaks. Now, if I could only give them to him without struts, shocks or springs. I am going to have to get replacements from the junk yard for those. Well, at least the struts and shocks, right? Won't the car still roll without springs or do I have that backwards and it will roll without shocks on the back? With McPherson Struts I guess I will need both on the front. Ah, another late night babble. Sorry. Too many projects going on at once.

thanks for all your help and input; it is greatly appreciated.

Why bother with wheels?

I parted out a '96 BMW 3 series last year, and when the flatbed came to take the carcass away he just dragged the remnants up on the flatbed. Front suspension & rotors were still on the car (front end wreck damage), but the rear suspension was gone. Just put a floor jack under the back end & used that for wheels to keep it from scraping the whack out of the garage floor.

I don't think the Junkies care whether you have wheels on the car or not.

Replying to last three responses...

I am located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

14"s seem to work for the rear so you must be talking about the front. I was hoping that maybe a different type of 14 would do it (I noticed a whole bunch of different ones lying around at the P-N-P. As far as 15"s go, did any of the 240s, 740s or 940s come with 15" wheels. There are a ton of those cars at my junk local junk yards but if the answer is "no" then I won't waste time searching them.

As far as P-N-P is concerned the car needs to roll. Kind of a silly requirement since they use a forklift once it gets to their location. I was told by a different tower that no tower will take a car without wheels. Maybe he was mistaken or maybe the towers are snobby in my area of the state. Who knows...maybe I will do some checking around. I just always default to P-N-P because they make it so easy to get rid of a car.

just flip the 14s around backwards....you're just dragging it. If that doesn't work pick up some space saver spares...cheap and skinny.

Thanks, I will try the backwards thing.

I did pick up a space saver spare from Pick-N-Pull but the only Volvo ones they ever have are 14". Usually there are a ton of 240, 740 and 940 vehicles with only one 850 in the mix and it is pretty well picked over. I have found this to be the case at the six location I have checked within driving distance.

I guess I could call some other junk yards too...but I thought that Volvo had funky bolt paterns which might make them hard to find. The price is great at Pick-N-Pull at around $7 a pop.

thanks for the help
