Anyone Successfully Running The Rica 35r Tune?

Greetings,

I've decided to go ahead and finish the build on my C after having it sit all winter unsold. I'm set with a manifold(custom) and turbo(35r) as well as injectors, just am stuck on the tuning. I know that RICA offers a 35r/750cc map but after searching the forum have yet to find anyone running it successfully. Are there still problems with this particular file or am I stuck going with a piggyback/standalone system?

regards,

Matt

afaik there were only 2 people that ever ran the file on here. Pras being one of them. Pras left and hasn't looked back, and I think the other had engine problems. Either way the file is completely out of whack, so unless you want to be the guinea pig and send your ecu back/forth a million times...yea you get my drift. At that point you are still not going to be able to have the flexibility of the standalone, but probably have in the same money

With that set up you should be looking at 400-450 wheels. If not ditch that set up. As for Rica vs standalone I I would not go standalone for those numbers. To get something better than bosche your looking at 7k and there is no real gain for you.

Your crazy the bosch standard unit is a joke at best. Having more knowledge on this factor then anyone on this board its easy to understand that 7k is an absolutely absurd number for standalone thats better then the standard bosch unit. Haltech cost $1600 with every option and install is a breeze for anyone who isn't MRDD. The tuning is strait forward and with little expertise you can learn from the instructions about everything you will ever need to know for tuning a Volvo. That being said if you are MRDD (That means 50% of the people reading this lol) just forget it all and give up on building a car yourself take to a good shop.

Ajhehr (aaron) is the other person with the RICA 35r map, he basically uses it to keep the CEL's off on his car. everything else is run with 034.

That sounds like a bunch of wasted money but hey its volvospeed I wouldn't expect less from this site. :(

You have the most understanding on this board about standalones when it comes to ones that belong on a 92 chevy astro van maybe. In the last 10 years I have used probably 6-7 different units and all said and done even on the cheap end your looking at 4k before you factor in the dash. 2k is a stupid number to expect for one that will out preform the bosche unit. Dont get me wrong. If you have a gimp ass porsche you can limp dick it up with some POS ecu with 2 injector and ignition drivers. Slap in some rats nest of a crimped wiring harness and say "Look at me! I'm a turbobricks god!". But in the real world a decent ECU is going to run 2k. A decent wiring harness is going to run another 1500. Plus tax your looking at 4k and thats bottom of the barrel. GEMs, Pectel, EFI, Motec, hatachi, siemens are all 4k+ box alone and can be as much as 8k+. So before you show up giving the kiddies false hopes say to yourself. Does a 400hp car really need standalone? Well maybe that thing you call and engine does.

He shouldn't need the Rica tune to do that. I kept the stock ecu in my car to keep the dash/computer functionality while I run NIRA to control the engine. No CELs from the stock ecu what so ever.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. As has already been seen in the thread there is a good amount of misinformation out there concerning standalone applications and our cars. Chuck, my power goals are somewhere between 400-450 whp and in the past had read that the stock ecu(reprogrammed of course) was upto the task. NIRA does seem like a great alternative and I may explore it further if for some reason I had problems with the tune. I've actually emailed EPL as well since i'm not too far from them now and if they're willing may give it a shot.

regards,

Matt

My common question comes into play here. At 500bhp how many miles do you expect out of the engine?

Well, the engine is built with forged internals so assuming I don't completely romp on the car I'd imagine it lasting for awhile. I am sure at that power level i'm greatly increasing my chances of having something in the car fail but it's a risk im willing to take. I've already put so much damned money into this car, whats a few grand more
