Ima Pirate
I'm just oh so full of questions lol... I guess its the only way to learn. Well on to the point of this post: Alright, i went expecting to get a head unit in my 960... Well i wanted to hold off after i heard what the salesperson had to tell me. He said that my car required a whole rewire that would be another 150 bucks ontop of the cost of the HU ... ive never heard of this before, so i was just wondering if this was a normal thing. I was told by the rather tall and scary man that i didnt want to ask questions from that it was due to the factory amplifier. So... i just said thank you and left, maybe to be back later if i find out this is true and legitimate. Any input on if i should go through with it would be helpful. if i find out its not true, or it shouldnt cost that much, i have another place that i can go to. They put a cd player in my moms 86 740 when i was drivin that one around.
Mesoam
I don't really know but i know there was a guy who put an aftermarket HU in his wifes 960 and ran into a problem like yours but somehow got arround it. Hmmmm try searching?
550
The guy at Circuit city seems to be an assclown. Done and done. Anyways, the only issue you have is the amplifier, which I reccomend forgetting about at the moment. Ok, now I will go through this, and it should work. What you need is an "amp bypass harness" what this does is it takes the AMP harness that has the rear speakers and such hooked to it and re-routes it back to the head unit. Once you get the harness for the new HU, and the amp bypass, everything will work just fine. My suggestion is stay away from circuit city, and do it yourself.I would say use crutchfield.comOr use the other place, because that is just such a common thing to say for a place like ciruit city. I took my daughter's '91 240 and got the the rewire verbage from both places. I am going to try Crutchfiled. However I could not remove the old head unit. Seems to be stuck or is there some sort of trick in poping it out?
pimpinavolvo
that's what circuit city told me for my 98 s70, and it was total bull. they wanted to rewire my car but all i needed was a simple wiring harness. if you have one in your area, try ultimate electronics, they didn't I'm dumb me
Ima Pirate
Thanks all for your input, i phoned around and i found a place that will charge me only for parts, not the 80 dollar install fee plus another 70 for parts... total bull. I love this forum :D
Veneficus
Yeah, um, lets see CC told me that I needed a total re-wire and then I showed them the wiring harness I got from bing. That made them shut up really quickly. If you contact bing_0 he should be to order you a wiring harness for your car and save you a pretty penny. IMO CC is only a good place to pick up things, not to have them install anything.
wattsat
IMHO, In general none of the Large Chain shops are going to know anything about properly installing a car stereo. I know there are some exceptions that actually have qualified people, but as a whole I recommed staying far far far away from them. Also, Circuit City, Best Buy and some extent Ultimate Electronics sell nothing but absolute crap.I don't recall ever buying anything from any of those stores other than speaker wire. Absolute total junk.

Absolute total junk.←Eh, you can get some decent quality stuff there but you really have to be aware of what you are purchasing. A lot of what they do sell however is of poor quality. Just be sure to check here before you buy something, just like Pirate did.
550
I don't recall ever buying anything from any of those stores other than speaker wire. Absolute total junk. its wire. Need I say more. Can't mess that up. Unless it isn't wire.Anyways, it isn't the product, it is the service that is lacking. Their employees only know what they have been taught in most cases, which isnt much. It is like telemarketers. they have a script that they read from, and after that they are useless, same with the people of best buy and circuit city.Typical scenario for auid install at large chainTrainer: "Ok we do normal cars(GM). very easy just add this(harness) and then bam, send them on their way"Trainer:"ANything that remotely looks tough, tell them it is a re-wire, that way it scares them off, and then we don;t have to do their lameass install, SCORE!"Soon To Be Employee:"Yes, master!"that is how it goes.Just got to be able to decipher the stuff out for yourself. mAydAy
I ran into the problems wtih the factory amp and went to Best Buy. The guys there were cool, I had the harness already he spliced it and did it up for me for free and I hooked it up. Its hard to tell, some of the guys like the ones I dealt with know alot and are pretty darn awesome.-Andy
JehovArob
Yeah. I got the wiring harness for my car from Circuit City. Just have to find the people that aren't complete morons and know what they're talking about.Of course, I did the rest by myself and got my headunit from eBay to save plenty of money. What color is the interior of your car?
Ima Pirate
the interior is like a tan and wood, but i would rather a black face since it would match the rest of the plastic pieces.
