1999 Volvo V70 Awd Cross Country Rack And Pinion Replacement

hello, I am new to this forum, and curious about a problem with a 1999 Volvo V70 AWD Cross Country. There's been quite a bit of noise coming from the front end and after a trip to the mechanic the diagnosis is that the rack and pinion needs replacement - with a $2400 price tag.

I enjoy tinkering, have another ride, and have garage access, so I am curious if this is something that is within the grasp of repair for a weekend warrior and whether there are resources that you suggest before tackling such a project. I was buoyed by the tie rod replacement how-to, and thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

hey, first what is the issue and noise you are hearing?

there are bushings, balljoints, tie rods, subframe bolts, control arms, CV axles and such that can cause all sorts of noises and for all we know it could be one of these.

the next question is how many miles do you have? I ask because the racks are typically pretty robust and usually last a long time in these vehicles, especially if the fluid is changed at higher mileage with the correct specified fluid. I think '98 and newer models use a required PS fluid that is only available at the dealer.

If it is without a doubt the rack (it is leaking fluid from the seal, binding from the rack and pinion itself, NOT one of the axles)

shop around, $2400 seems a little high.

is this a Volvo dealer quoting you that price?

Rebuilt aftermarket Rack and Pinion Steering units generally cost about no more than $400 online, some places even with free shipping. I'd even be surprised if even a dealer would charge something like $1200 for a new factory unit and another $1200 for labor.

Why not join and add a signature w/ location(you will probably get more answers that way). That price does seem quite steep however areas do vary. As for a DIY job hard to say. It does require supporting the motor and lowering the rear half of the subframe..at least that is how I do them? I find it hard to believe the rack is making noise?

I love these forums for this kind of feedback. I am in Washington, DC - the car has 125k miles. I will get some greater details on the noise/prognosis. This is a friends car - in nearly perfect shape otherwise - which is headed to the carmax graveyard if I decide it is too great a task. More to come. If it is something that is within my reach then I have a great opportunity to pick up a great car for little money.
