Guest zvolv
The V40 today started and then died. I unplugged the MAF, started then died. Plugged it back in, started up, died. Restarted. Runs fine. This has happened before and so it has a brand new Mass Air Flow Meter in it that we installed probably about a year ago. What gives? Ideas? When is the last time you clean AIC?How to clean MAFHow to clean AIC
flyfishing3
are you running an aftermarket filter. maybe to much oil getting to MAF.
Guest zvolv
I unplugged the MAF because thats a RWD trick to test the MAF. If it runs with it unplugged and doesnt run with it plugged in that tells you bad MAF. Still looking for ideas and grateful for any help. And this is a mom car. ZERO aftermarket parts. Not even airfilter.
Cal3thousand
A stalled car should definitely have codes store in the computer. Unless you have a code reader, a stop to autozone to borrow one or a trip to the dealer should help you find the cause.Post back with the codes. It gave a CEL at first but before I could pull it it cleared itself. No CEL right now!
Guest zvolv
Well, just took it to the dealer. Leaky FPR was one problem, but I dont think that caused the random no start. That did fix the excessive cranking to start though! They said they couldnt duplicate the no start so --> no fix.

Guest zvolv
Starter? Starter??? I am just saying it also had a seperate problem of excessive cranking to start. That was definately fixed by the tech replacing the FPR. Nothing to do with a starter. I still insist that the no start was seperate from the FPR leaking. I was just hoping it was a common problem that vspeeders would know about. The tbody was cleaned out as well and the IAC is aftermarket and tested good. Now the car starts right up with no excessive cranking. The no-start seemed to be an odd coincidence that I still think is MAF or ECU related. smokin' T5M
Could be the idle speed motor. It can be getting stuck and not adjusting to a cold or warm start. When it does run does the idle fluctuate?
YV1LS53
I've seen a few ECU's go bad for this same prob. They usually kick up a M.A.F sensor code & a Torque Reduction code. Something about bad software. It's wierd, both cars had about 120.k miles on them. How many miles does yours have???
Alfred McMartin
Could it be the immobilizer? I had a similar problem where my c70 would not start, would crank forever, or it would start and then die (Once it did start it would run fine). I first took the car to an independent shop but they were unable to figure it out. I ended up taking it to Ravenna Volvo in Seattle and they found that the immobilizer was the problem. The immobilizer was not communicating with the key and was reporting that the car was being hot-wired. This is why I had no codes. I tried quite a few things before I found out that this was the source of the problem. It may not be the MAF at all...

It could be the ignition ring where you insert the key went bad.
smokin' T5M
When the immobilizer on the S40's go bad the car won't crank. The symbol of the car with an "X" will flash on the dash. In the 70 series the car will just crank or start then stall.
