Hood Stuck After Fire

Recommended Posts

So my car was smoking from the driver's side one day and when I go to pull the hood release, I find that only the driver's side would pop. My hood is stuck and I don't know what caused the fire. I just know that it burned through the cable and the vacuum line for my boost gauge.

Now my question is: How should I go about getting the hood up? Unless I get a better suggestion, I think I will try to cut the cable that goes across (I can see it and the boost/vac line in front of the battery if I wedge the hood up).

What could I cut this with? Should I try to strip the outer casing off to get to the inner cable? (please remember that I don't have barely any room to get in with the wedged hood).

EDIT: I tried to pop the hood while someone pulled up on the other side; needless to say, didn't work

Sorry to hear about the fire. To open the hood you might want to try removing the driver side knee bolster and grabbing the end of the hood release cable with a pair of vise grips and pulling on it real hard. It could be that the fire caused some slack to develop.

Once you get it the hood open be real careful to check all the wires to make sure they aren't fried.

I thought about that, but I am afraid that pulling too hard will damage the section of wire going to the driver's side.

the cable goes across the top of the rad support, jus pull the cable out and hard it should release the hood. if not have a helper pull the hood up while you pull the release.

cutting the wire wont do anything, you have to pull the wire to release the latches if you can reach it pull that wire hard

if that dont work you may want to try to get the turnsignals out and try from there

if you cut it pull the end out and pull the inner cable with a pair of vise grips.

Thats what I had in mind... we'll see....

thanks, to everyone for their ideas.

If I remember correctly, if you take off the air guide/splash pan, you should be able to see the latch on the right side. Use a very long scredriver/prybar and move the lever to the side to open the hood.

Cutting the cable is not the best idea. You will still need to pull on it to get the latch to release. Taking the turnsignal off will not buy you anything either, it is on the outside of the fender.

I tried going under the right side, but it looks like the windshield washer reservoir is in the way.

I can see the wire across the top of the header panel and I can grab it with some effort. I will try pulling it, and if I can't do that, I might cut it.

What is involved in removing the washer reservoir? is it possible from the bottom?

i think the bolts are on the bottom so i dun think you need the hood up.

I thought I saw that too, when i was under there.

But are there any lines that might be damaged if I'm not careful?

I just looked at my wagon, the water bottle top is clipped on to the ECU box. It won't pull down easily until the ECU box is out of there.

There is NO room to get anything from the bottom to the latch, there is sheet metal in the way.

I assume you have tried pulling on the cable from inside of the car with vice grips.

If you can get a good bite on the cable sheathing and compress it enough to grab the cable inside, going at it from the driver's side headlight might be your only good bet. Before you do that, push down on the pass side hood so the catch isn't stressed.
