Newb Fuel Filter Replacement Questions

Recommended Posts

Wix makes a quality product. I use their filters on my Camry and never worry about it.

But I will only put a Bosch gas filter on my Volvo.

You driving a Toyota or a Volvo?

40k on my wix filter no problem, they are a quality company and I believe they supply all the filters to nascar, their are very good aftermarket companies and some that are not like scan-tech, hamburg technic for other parts. I learned bosch is outsourcing the making of their products even more to make more revenue, have had quality issues in the last few things I bought like spark plugs that were orignally made in germany and now they are made in some third war country.

Ah conflicting advice. Well I returned the Wix and ordered a Bosch through my indy.

sorry for making jokes if it made it unclear: Wix indeed has good reputation quality, I meant that part, I just hesitate to go outside OEM on some things.

Scoot's point about outsourcing is a good one, with China's rise in world economy it is going to be a problem more and more with all the parts on our cars, maybe even the OEM ones...

haha it is okay. I figured the Wix would have been ok but for my peace of mind I'll use the Bosch.

I added a picture, I think that is the fuel filter but its orientation is different from Bay 13 and I have to go through the trunk to get to the clasp. Seems to be too much work for a simple fuel filter, anyone confirm that is actually it.

Thanks.

Wow i really hope thats not your fuel filter, are you sure ur looking at the correct location, directly infront of the passenger rear wheel it should be RIGHT there cant miss it. The write up is for the 850 S/V/C 70 so theres i dont see why it would be different

That is the only filter looking item back there I can find. My car does have the Secondary Air System so it is a little different than my other 98' V70 XC my sister now has. I added more pictures here: http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/b...k=nav_tab_album

Is it true that you can do this entire job from inside the spare tire well? Is it necessary to get under the car at all?

I don't see any way of doing it from inside the tire well. I popped that little well next to the tire well to get access to the retention clip/bracket but there is no room for hands to actually disconnect the lines.

can you undo the braket from inside, then from under the car pull the lines?

yes, I can pull the line from the rear of the car but the line on the front part I have no access to unless I'd be doing it blind and using my hands through the trunk well were is very tiny. I have yet to attempt this as I think about it so more.

it does require some muscle but i would be assume you could do it blind just hope its not to stuck on there, are u sure u cant reach under the car and undo the front line aswell? try and maneuver or something. And btw your braket looks really Rusted!! if u find that u cant get the bracket back on get some Zip-Ties and do it that way

I have trouble doing things blind as I have limited tools, car knowledge etc. and I would hate to drop the fuel line. The third picture in my gallery is why I can't get the front line from under the car, that metal plate is directly below the filter and in the way. My car does have a bit of rust on it, the North East is just plain ole' salty. Filter hasn't been done since 2006 so I figured I'd change it.

I have a good mechanic but I wanted to try this first to get some knowledge/experience in dealing with my car as I don't work on it often. I'll see what I can do.

Noticed oil dripping down the dipstick to the pan (down about 1/4-1/2 quart), popped the dipstick while running and a bit of white smoke puffing out...breather system from what I read from the forums :(

relax and take it easy for the fuel filter u dont need tools, cept to take off the bracket, after that its all about the gun show maybe its easier with a screwdriver but wtv i did it by hand, i dunno u cant really drop the fuel lines IIRC just be careful and take your time and yea the breather system 120 dollar kit from FCP and 1 day with afew basic tools extentions swivell joints 10mm ratchet and a torque wrench and your fine its really not that hard theres a really good write up by Zimbo ill see if i can find that

haha I do kind of get riled up when working on my car. Thanks for the info on the breather system and the help here. I found the link for Zimbos awesome write-up.

My understanding is that the breather system removes harmful fumes from the crankcase so if I don't get it fixed what could be the longer term damage?
