hgray14
Did Volvo make any Turbo AWDs in the 850 or S70 body style? I am guessing no on the 850 but what about the S70? I am looking for a project car to make big horsepower. I want to rebuild the engine in the garage and eventually drop it into an AWD. If they didn't make an S70 in AWD and turbo how hard will it be to swap a turbo engine/tranny into it and will the AWD parts be able to handle the extra power?thanksHouston

Stick to the M56H with single-mass if you're going to be making serious power. But yes they did make turbo AWD (LPT and Rs).

Stay away from the haldex sidewinder units unless you want to drop big coin.
rynodyno312
IIRC the S70/V70 were available with AWD and the 2.4L light pressure turbo. The AWD will NOT hold up to big power though; better off going FWD with a LSD if you want a high-powered volvo.
hgray14
I should have clarified; I forgot to mention that I am not looking for a wagon. So what are the newer V70Rs running for their AWD? They come from the factory with pretty good power. I want that kind of thing but in an 850/S70 sedan styling. What do I do?And someone mentioned an 850 with AWD? I would love that but didn't know they existed...what year/model?Houston

Che'_Moderator
Engine is not really going to matter since its being rebuilt anyways. So just get any turbo AWD 850 or S70 and go from there
Ipd
We never saw 850 AWD in the US but we have a number of Canadian customer with AWD 850 manual trans, lucky buggers...
TBM
I'm pretty sure the AWDs were all 2.4T's+1, no T5's.
lookforjoe
I think if you're talking over 300bhp, the AWD will not hold up for you; that's what has been implied - you'll snap the bevel gear pinion/output sleeve or driveshaft, if the viscous coupling doesn't disintegrate.98-00 V70 AWD, XC & R's came with AWDI'm running my lpt motor w/ a 16T, 15psi, M66 AWD & a T5M ECU (waiting for a remap from IPD on the original ECU)- the advantage to the AWD is that I get less wheel spin & torque steer; power is just transferred to the rear. hgray14
What about the V70Rs from 2004-2007...aren't they throwing down something like 300hp? I am seeing old reviews of the 1999 S70/V70 stating that the V70 comes in AWD. And according to the page in IPDs catalogue having to do with their ECU upgrades there were three S70 for 1999. Here is how they list them:S70 AWD 2.4T 1999-2000 190hpS70, V70 2.4T 1999-2000 190hpS70, V70 T5 1999-2000 247hpIs that true? The V70 in both the 2.4T and T5 were not available in AWD? Not that I want a V70 but at least if the T5 came in AWD I could consider its AWD equipment for an S70...well, if it can be swapped in at all.Maybe I need to look around Canadia for an AWD 850. Did they come in turbo and how well do they hold up to high 200's in horse power?I am quite happy with the gains I am getting from my IPD upgrades over my stock 222 hp in my '95 turbo but would rather have it in an AWD model. If I have to choose between power and AWD I guess the power will win...I can't go back to a slower car...never have been able to.Houston
Keaton85
If you want good power with an AWD then i would just go out and buy an audi. The Volvo AWD systems suck although you could do a S70 AWD 6-spd with 300HP at the crank with a decent amount of work. Thats not out of the realm of possibilities.
