How Screwed Am I?

I went to jump my Yellow #2 the other day (jump start...you perverts...although...she sure is sexy) and strange electrical things happened.

I have noticed some quirks before (lights come on when the switch is on the running lights spot but turn off when it is switched all the way to 'on', the fog lights are on no matter what once the key is turned to on).

But when I jumped it the other morning not only wouldn't it even turn over but the flasher were blinking on the exterior of the car and the flasher lights on the dash were dimly blinking. When I hit the flasher button to the on position the dash lights and clicking sound become stronger and the flashers stayed on. It has a three guage pod and none of them seem to be working properly.

The previous owner, who sold this for parts, told me that it had sat for a while and that he thought that the water in the car (I had to soak out the foot wells of both front and rear of the passenger side...car was sitting noise slanted down with plugged up trunk lip drain pipes for over a year) had effect the electronics.

Any opinions/advise? Are these types of things easy to fix? Do I just need an entirely new wiring harness or will the problem most likely be deeper than that? Have you seen this kind of thing before?

Not sure if this helps but the A/C and outside air lights flash when I start the car and along with the service light being on the Check Engine light is always flashing. I was told that might mean misfire but when I drove it for about 15 miles about a week ago it seemed to be fine.

The car is a 1995 T-5R in Yellow with 210K miles on it. Blackstone Labs tells me the engine is in good shape.

thanks for any advice you can give me.

That is the immobilizer kicking in. Lock and unlock the doors a couple of times and that problem should go away.

A lot of people modified the fog lights so that can run them along with the headlights. From the factory the fog lights are supposed to turn off when the headlights are turned on. Some modifications were better than others.

Immobilizer? What the heck is that? That doesn't sound so good.

As far as the lights go...the fog light thing makes sense, I guess but they are on no matter what...even with the light switch turned to off. But it is the headlights that concern me...on when I only want running lights but off when I turn the switch all the way to on. weird...

the alarm system starter kill is the immobilizer. the car was probably locked when the battery died, so shut the doors and lock and unlock the doors. that should turn it off.

good to know. I will the cars unlocked if they have weak batteries.

thanks

Just hooked up the charger to the car and unlocked and locked the doors 15-20 times and it is still not starting. I guess I will charge it for a while and see if that helps...otherwise, any suggestions?

Under the dash, high on the firewall, is the lower central electrical unit where many of the relays live. You will need to remove the lower dash panel and practice severe contortionism to get to it.

You will need to remove relay number 210/211. Look on the bottom of the 210 side of the relay and locate pins number 50E and 50F. Fashion a jumper wire and jumper between the socket positions associated with the 50E and 50F pins. At this point the entire immobilizer circuit will be defeated and the car should start.

I think this is a 'flood' car from the problems you describe and the water evidence. Electronics goes nuts in flooded cars. Look under the kick panel and firewall to see if you can see water marks on how deep the flood was. Pull out the ECU and TCU to see if it's dry in there.

no they dont, i killed the batttery and had the thing go off after i connected it back up. lock and unlocked it and it worked like a charm. check the immobilizer fuses. make sure the battery is fully charged..

Cool, thanks....yup, a few hours of charging the battery and it is all fine now and starts up with no problem.

I highly doubt it is a flood car but who knows. We don't have a lot of flooding around here. The ECU and TCU are dry and seem to work fine. Like I said, I took it for a drive the other day and it performed just like all my others. I will check to see if I can see water marks anywhere but if it was a flood car it had to have happened a few years ago since the spot it was parked for the past couple years has never flooded.

If it is a flood car what kind of work am I looking at? Replace some computers, relays, etc or am I going to have to tear all the wiring out? It is a Yellow T-5R so I am be encouraged to save it from the junk yard.
