8501995
Hi,I went to the store tonight with my Volvo 850 GLE 1995, 60 000KM.There was absolutely no problem going there (as there was no problem before). When I came back though, the transmission was behaving strangely to say the least. The yellow arrow in the dash was flashing (I think this is the light that indicates you are using the Winter mode or the lower gears). Also the light that tells wether you are using the sport or economy transmission mode was also blinking. And finally the "lambda" triangle light (which does not seem to be documented in the user manual) was lit up in the dash....Now the driving... I did not push it hard as I was worried, but the gears were not changing properly, especially when moving from stopped to some speed, as if the transmission did not know in which gear to go.When I came back I checked the transmission oil level... everything seemed ok on that side.I tried turning the car on and off, but to no avail...I checked in the user manual, but all it says to do when seeing those lights flashing is to go to the dealer, which does not help me!Anyways, I'd like any input you could have on the problem....The car's got only 60 000KM so I would not imagine the transmission would be broken...! potroast
I lost a tranny at 30k, so it's not too outside of the box for a tranny to fail. Seems like the biggest weak-point for the 850 series was the transmission. You have a 1995, which will simplify this... Read the codes that your computer has stored. These will help you determine the problem, and what needs to be done to solve it.
8501995
I don't have an instrument to read the code so I can't really tell...I've read the article on changing the PNP switch on bay13 and the symptoms are really similar to what I am experiencing... including the fact that it would stard in 3rd gear, which would make the starts quite hectic...So I'm gonna try the ratchet trick explained there tomorrow....Anyways if you guys have more possible solutions keep them coming!Oh and by the way, how much does the PNP switch cost? Thanks a lot! VolvoTech
Your trans is in limp mode i would not jump to the conclusion that it is the pnp switch you should definalty get the codes checked before you spend money throwing parts at the car
shurgen
You don't have to have an instrument to pull codes. There are instructions on how to read codes on 93-95 850 in Repairs/Maintenance section

maiku
limp mode is what it sounds likethe car is "limping"basically stays in 3nd gear ( i think) and the arrow light comes onyou can still drive the car, it just isn't smooth.go read the codes, they could helpbtw, i have a 1995 850 as well, and no transmission problems at 190000km
shurgen
yea, mine is holding up well too 200+k miles. Had to replace pnp switch once and that's all
DEWFPO
Does sound like the PNP sensor. Costs about $100 for the part. Check codes first to save money. When the trans in 'limp' mode it stays in 3rd gear.DEWFPO
Guest Guest
Is there a way to get out of limp mode? Why/how does the transmission go in limp mode?
potroast
Is there a way to get out of limp mode? ←yes, fix the problem Why/how does the transmission go in limp mode?←The ECU gets inconsistant data, or is missing data from a sensor, so it can't accurately determine some piece of information required to control the transmission. For the purpose of safety and to prevent further damage, it enters a "limp-home" mode, which forces you into 3rd gear (although you should be able to switch gears manually) so that you can safely reach your destination to fix the problem. 8501995
Hi,Thanks all for you posts, they are all very instructive and helping me out a lot!Ok well I tried the ratchet thing (switching for Park to Low 20 times), but it did not seem to change the behaviour.I read the codes using the LED and I got a code 223 from A1-Transmission.This error code is : 223 Throttle position (TPS) sensor signal too lowSo this is where I am now... I don't know what that means, but I'll try looking into it and do some research.Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
potroast
The TPS is attached to the throttle cable on the driver's side front of the engine. It's under a plastic cover. The throttle is cable-controlled (mechanical), so the TPS is a sensor that tells the ECU what throttle position you're at...
8501995
Ok well I went under this plastic cap looking for a sensor...I thought it would be attached to the cable or something, but there wasn't anything close to the cable or the wheel that's attached to it....I saw a few electrical connections to things that could be sensors in that general area, but I don't really know what I'm looking for!Could anyone give me more information? Thanks! tenn850
What did they do at the dealer. If they messed with the area on top of the tranny?
