High Flow Cats...i Have Been Had...

I kept reading about high flow cats (Magnaflow) so when I was down at my mechanic's place I asked him how much they are. He looked at me funny and then laughed telling me that the only ones that come close are universal which means extra work to install and even then if they aren't working like they are required to (standards are set by law) they will set off the check engine light.

So...what the heck? This seems like a pretty sensible group so how come everyone keeps talking about Magnaflow cats???

The above link is a pretty good read...I didn't know that a cat wasn't baffled like a muffler. Sounds like you can see through all cats...not just high flow ones.

You like to argue so lets keep this simple. EGTs. A better/larger flowing cat lowers EGTs period. So lets skip the BS about volumetric flow rates and back pressure.

Nope, just looking for some real answers on this one since I don't know. It just seems odd that a muffler shop would not be knowledgable on the topic so having more ammo for my next visit would be good.

So that link to the site calling it a myth is wrong? What is wrong with their argument? Do our check engine lights not come on from a different Cat?

EGTs?

Google EGTs and come back.

Okay, googled it but actually it turns out that it is EGT not EGTs...that returns Enhanced Government Tax Software...which being tax time might actually be useful. Not knowning what it was I didn't know to drop the 's'.

Well, sounds like I shouldn't have a problem finding a shop that doesn't think it is a myth. When looking at the actual Cats how can I tell if they are really a high flow model? According to what I am reading online I should be able to see through them, unlike a muffler, so what am I looking for besides that? My pipe in is stock and my out is the IPD 2.5". Is there a certain size/flow max that I have to start worrying about having an error code come up or having an issue passing SMOG?

thanks

why the hell would your CEL light come on if ur installing a new cat lol? that doesnt make sense atleast i dont think so with my non-substantial understanding of an exhaust system

I think what they are trying to convince us is that if we go outside the perameters set by the SMOG folks (which is also part our computer programming) for Cats it is going to set off an engine error code. I guess if it isn't pulling out enough of the poison they are saying it will set off an engine code. Then again, aren't there folks running none at all? If that is the case than that part might not be true...but then again maybe I will just go with none. these cars are fairly clean...and besides, the fact that I own 5+ vehicles at any time means that those are vehicles that others aren't driving...so in a sense I am helping to keep the air cleaner by holding so many vehicles. Maybe I can get the state to subsidize some of my parking tickets.

Cali is a circle jerk. Technically a shop cannot replace a cat unless its older than 10 years old or damaged. Lots of POS cats will throw a CEL. Since you are in PRK I would make sure you get a CARB cat or be prepared for hell. Random comes to mind.
