"check Engine" Instructions And Codes...

I have been reading through countless posts that have nothing to do with the check engine light codes yet came up in my search just the same. Either the search features sucks, I am using the wrong terminology or I am just an idiot. scratch that last one...that has nothing to do with THIS particular search.

Can someone tell me where I can find directions on how to use the computer dealie under the hood in my 1995 850 Turbo. Mine is prior to the OBD in the center console working (I already tried three readers that way and none of them worked).

Thanks, and sorry for posting a question that has probably been posted a million times.

Check out the links in my sig.

oh boy! It is sunny and nice out...I have most of my work done already and I have a Yellow T-5R sitting in my driveway with what Blackstone has told me is a good engine but that has the service light on, the check engine light is blinking and the A/C lights are blinking. This is going to be interesting finding out what all is wrong with the car.

Wish me luck!

Blinking CEL's usually indicate a misfire code. How are the plugs ? New, old, cheap, OEM ?

No idea...they were in the car when I bought it. I had been told something about it might be misfires but when I drive it it seems fine. Can I have a decently driving car AND misfires? seriously, I don't know. I can't without knowing it in my 240Z but it is an older car with a simple computer so maybe the Volvo masks it better.

I have some new plugs I will try once I check out all the codes.

Okay, so I got all the codes and instructions printed out and sure enough the light doesn't blink at all. Ever. No matter which slot I plug into.

What do I do now?

thanks

Invest in a Haynes manual for starters.

I don't remember which manual I have but I have one. Useful, but not nearly as useful as this list. It doesn't tell me what to do if the Diagnostic unit doesn't work. I definitely have codes...the check engine light is blinking as well as the REC and A/C lights on the Climate Control Unit.

Should be everything you need, test mode 3 can be entertaining and there will always be a cruise control code, that is normal. A Vadis disk is what you want, try Ebay & Amazon. Just take your time step by step and maybe try one of the others in your fleet.

Lol did u turn the key on to the 2nd position?

Ya...why, do you know me? That IS the kind of thing for me to forget but I didn't.

So, where do I go from here if my diagnostic connector won't flash? Can I swap on out with another one of my cars? Where are the codes actually stored? If they are stored in the ECU I should be able to swap the DC from another car, right?

also, does anyone have the link to instruction on how to get the true mileage of a car through the ECU? I was all over VS, Matthew's and the web and all I could find was references to it or people posting what they found when they did but nothing about how to do it or how to correct the odometer using a pencil and a drill (or drill battery...I saw refereces to both).

thanks

A little pricey. I just bought, for $5, the entire wiring manual for my cars. It runs around 200 pages but has nothing about codes. I have downloaded all the codes and all the instruction from Bay13's pages but nothing tells me what to do if the diagnostic unit doesn't unit doesn't work.

Oh and a correction from before. I am not sure if I the car is changing on me or if I just missed it but the check engine light has gone off and all that is on now is the Service light, which is flashing and the climate control lights, which are still flashing as before. Time to try a different ECU, me thinks. Just to make sure I don't have a funky one.

Did you try reading codes before the dead battery/jump start? If not I think you may have just erased the stored memory, the various computers haven't run a cycle yet, there is no information to retrieve. I would pull the negative cable for 20 mins. then drive the car for a while, as long as the cel light doesn't start flashing again you should be fine. If you do try a different ecu be sure to disconnect the negative cable for 15-20 mins. before unplugging.
