"check Engine" Instructions And Codes...

Did you try reading codes before the dead battery/jump start? If not I think you may have just erased the stored memory, the various computers haven't run a cycle yet, there is no information to retrieve. I would pull the negative cable for 20 mins. then drive the car for a while, as long as the cel light doesn't start flashing again you should be fine. If you do try a different ecu be sure to disconnect the negative cable for 15-20 mins. before unplugging.

Great advice; I hadn't even considered that a dead battery would clear the codes. The fact that I can't get the little red light to come on at all on the diagnostic unit worries me but I can deal with that later.

thanks

Oh and a correction from before. I am not sure if I the car is changing on me or if I just missed it but the check engine light has gone off and all that is on now is the Service light, which is flashing and the climate control lights, which are still flashing as before. Time to try a different ECU, me thinks. Just to make sure I don't have a funky one.

Flashing service light is a new one to me. But those can be reset at the dealer, sometimes for free.

Flashing climate control should occur for about 15-20 seconds at start up and indicates a fault in the system. Mine did that when it needed to be re-charged last summer.

I have the service reset instructions around here somewhere but I too have never seen a blinking one and was wondering what it meant. I will delve deeper and see what I can find.

That is exactly what the climate control is doing...I was warned it might need to be recharged. The funny thing about hearing that from so many people is that my understanding is that the AC is a closed system. It isn't like the air in your tires or the coolant in your radiator; it is designed by law not to leak. It is a big no-no to leak freon (sp?). So, it may need to be recharged but my concern will be finding how it is leaking before wasting the money recharging it.

thanks for the advice

I have seen the contacts on the test button get corroded which renders the whole system useless. The button box can be pried apart by releasing the plastic tabs that hold it together. Once the top of the test box is lifted off the switch contacts are exposed and they can be cleaned.
