Headlight Wattage For 9005 9006

I have stock 1995 850 Turbo headlight housings/lenses and am wondering if anyone has had any problems running high wattage 9005 and 9006 lights in them. I have been running 100w/80w for about a week now and love them but am wondering if I might end up producing too much heat for the lenses or other parts to handle. (Yes, I know these are not legal for the road.)

thanks

Your lenses will be fine. It's the wires that will have overheating issues. If you want to keep running those lights you should upgrade your harness wires also.

You're not going about it the correct way, though, because even if you do the proper wire adjustments, your lights will still be dimmer than an HID retrofit, which requires much less work.

ya, but aren't those pretty pricey? I am looking at the BMW style "Angel" wrap arounds that someone posted a day or two ago...maybe I will do that. I have run these high wattages in my 1972 Z car and never melted any wires but we will see. I will probably just run it the way it is (at about $6 a bulb) and not mess with anything else until I have to...that keeps it cheap.

HIDs are cheap these days. There's enough sweat shops producing them that they're down to well under $100 for a good kit. The last kit I did took me 10 minutes to setup in the dark. Now the lights put out three times as many Lumens as your setup and I don't have to worry about hurting the lenses (plastic, not glass like in your 850) or burning up the wiring.

Wow, they have come down in price. Last I checked (which was a couple years ago) they were $300-$400. Any advice as to where the best place to get them is?

thanks

Kits can be found on ebay, of course. A lot of members here support a vendor at mydepots.com. One of my kits was purchased through him about 1.5-2 years ago.

There are also many, many other sites around the net. Some places are more expensive than others, but for the most part, excluding a few higher brands (Phillips etc), they are all the same product, just with different stickers slapped on the ballasts. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $100 including shipping for a no-name kit at this point. It's safe to assume companies you've never heard of before are no-names, regardless of what the person selling the kits claims.

IMHO, Sharp HID http://www.sharphid.com/

He's a membe

+1 for Sharphid, fast, cheap, easy to install and really, really small the ballast has about the size of a Motorola V3 it is impressive!

Good point man, no-name kits you should keep under $100, even a brand name like sharphid (DDM apexcone) $100 to $200 at most. I personally wouldn't go higher in prices than that, no need at all!

Prices have come down a lot on HID's. I agree with the other postings on where to get HID's: www.sharphid.com John has good products and customer support. Right now, if you order 35w or 55w HID kit, you get upgraded to the ultra slim ballast for free! As I think someone said, the ballast is like the size of a Motorola Razor phone.

I got the 35w 5K with the ultra slim ballast. It seems like most people VS like the 35w 6K. I wouldn't recommend the 55w unless your running projectors or at least E-Code lenses.

I use the 9005 in the low beam scoket, very easy mod and the light output is way beter. You just have to shave off the insert in the connector for the 9005 then they just plug right in. The 9006 have a coating on the tip and 9005 have no coating, so light can be output is straight ahead. I have done this to all my cars and family cars with no problems. I have seen friends use the 100w without upgrading the wiring, and they melted bad, he ended up paying a lot more then just upgrading in the begining.
