Door Panel Skins

Recommended Posts

I want to do something different with my door panel. I am thinking of rewrapping the leather insert in red suede but I might have a hard time getting the color right. Here's what my door looks like now:

Opinions of the current look and what would look good with it are all welcome

whats with the red speaker grill, door handle, and sail panel??

Just trying to be different :D ... All my speaker covers are painted red, gives it a nice detail to the car IMO. The sail just looked too plain in black to me and so did the handle. I might go back to black on the handle, but it will stay painted and polished. Also, the paint feels so much better to the touch than the cheap feeling plastic. My exterior door handles are body matched along with the bumper trim.

The mirrors were a good idea. Everything else is a good idea taken too far. You're on the right track with thinking about painting them black again. If your interior pieces go back to a reasonable color, then you absolutely could pull of red suede panels. In fact, I think it would look great.

Don't you laugh when you walk through a mall parking lot and see all the spray painted interiors in Celicas and Integras?

What kind of paint did you use, and how did you prep it? I'm thinking of painting the wood trim on the doors and glove box on my '01 V70 T5 (black interior, silver exterior). The wood looks so darn cheap, and it's peeling where the door handle releases are. Not sure what color to go with though..

I laugh if it looks poorly done.

I took my time on my pieces that I did. The sail piece looks like its an extension of the exterior paint/sheet metal with the painted mirrors. Actually, the paint job looks better than my exterior at this point in time.

I did the door pull first, and although I like it, especially the feel, it was an experimental thing. I personally think that matching some of your interior pieces to your exterior color is not rice. RICE is about HOW shit is done. If it looks like a possible option or designer upgrade that is made with quality in mind, I don't think its rice. What do you guys think of this:

edit: fixed image

You are right about the door pull, it goes over the edge. But I'm not trying to do what everyone else is doing. To me, more rice is having carbon fiber pieces that don't eliminate weight. I am seriously thinking about going to gloss black on the door pull.

My biggest question really is whether I should try to do the red on the leather insert. And I have 2 concerns:

1) will the red match? and if not, should I go black?

2) should I keep the bunched leather look or go to something flat/slightly filled?

I sand the shit out of everything, primered with krylon, painted with just regular gloss enamel (maybe krylon too? cant remember), I color sanded, then hit it with a ton of clear (numerous light coats), sanded again (600 down to 1500), then polished the clear with scratch remover until it was smooth.

as far as color goes, go black or buy a flame suit if you decide to post it.

Can some one P shop something for me?

I want to do SEM dye on part or the whole door panel to black. I was thinking at the line where the bottom of the speaker cover is on down.

EDIT: new idea, everyone post your interior and what your mods are that make it look good/better/not rice/euro ... whatever. I need good, fresh, unique, cool ideas.

If you have a stock-ass-grandma-lookin-interior, peace.

get 850R suede panels and die the small patch of leather on the R panel red, if you had the whole panel red it would look way too much

Not a bad idea actually... now we are getting constructive. BUT, i dont want to buy it. I want to DIY something... But the way to much thing is not my concern either, if its all red, I will have a red line that runs on the sides and I think that will look good as a two tone effect. I'm worried that if I order red, it will not match my current red in there.

hmm... perhaps red panels in the door, grills + handle back to stock/black? I think most of why the Vette interior looks good is their choice of locations. The panels they chose to color dont define the shape of the area they're in... if that makes sense. Inserts and knee bolsters, things that accent.

And you're 100% right, the quality of the job is HUGE in regards to how it presents itself, and how it's recieved by others.
