Paint Codes - How Close Are These Colours?

My 1995 850 Turbo has a paint code of 419-12. Someone hit me and instead of paying the $2900 to fix the fender and door I am going to try to find matching parts from a parts car. I found parts from a car with the colour code 418-11. How different is that from my 419-21?

thanks

register with volvo, they have a listing in with the vin code decryptions. I remember it saying that the last 2 numbers detail how the paint is applied (coats, clearcoats, etc).

According to Paintscratch all 419s are the same and the fourth and fifth digit don't mean anything important...

But, according to http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/paint_colour_codes.shtml they do mean something

fourth digit of 1 (BASF) - the paint supplier, I am guessing

fifth digit of 1 (solvent based)

fifth digit of 2 (water based Metallic/Pearl + Varnish)

It sure makes it seem like 419-12 is going to be quite different than 419-11.

Can anyone help clear up if there will actually be a difference in the way it looks on the car? It sure appears like it would be distinctly different but according to Paintscratch they are the same.

Even if they were the same codes they would still be noticeably different as the two cars weren't exposed to the same environments. They will both have fading, but fading isn't exactly linear with age.

I am not concerned with the fading...for some reason this colour tends to handle it very well. I added a part from a 200K car to this car when it was at 90K and you wouldn't even know it.

My concern is the difference between -12 and -11 in the two colour codes and if the two will look different. Nobody seems to be able to answer that for me. I think I am going to call Volvo today and see what they have to say.

thanks

Call a local body shop and ask them what they have in their books for your color code.

Chances are those are Variants.

That is what I am hoping but "solvent based" sounds so different from "water based Metallic/Pearl + Varnish".

If it were something like "water based" I wouldn't worry but that the whole "metallic/Pearl + Varnish" sure seems like it is specifying something different than just "solvent based".

That is a good idea to check with a local shop...they often times are more up to date on these things than the dealer who probably hasn't dealt with this colour for years.
