850 Speakers

Hi,

Almost every one of my speakers in my 1995 850 turbo sedan are dead or dieing and the back half the speakers cut out every now and than whenever they choose. I'm currently in the process of trying to figure out what speakers I should replace and what speakers I should just disconnect. I'm replacing the headunit with the Alpine CDA-9883. Going to get the Alpine MRP-M500 amp and the Alpine SWR-1222D sub. What I was going to do was get the Alpine SPS-500 speakers for the front doors which are 5 1/4" and get Alpine SPS-507 which are 5x7's for the rear deck. My main question is, should i replace the 5x7's in the rear deck or should i only replace the front door speakers since i getting the sub. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zach

This is zddrum2, so should i get anything for the back doors instead? I do want to have sound in the back since i always driving people around or should i only replace the front 2 and just leave everything else unplugged.

I'm kind of new to all this, was also wondering, if i only replace the front 2 door speakers, is that ok to do since the head unit is putting out 50Wx4. Do i need to have 4 speakers or is it ok to have only 2 going off of the head unit i guess is what i'm trying to figure out.

On another note, any suggestions as to how i should arrange the sub in the trunk to get the best sound quality, was thinking in the middle, right at the pull down arm rest or would it be a better idea to put it on the passenger side of the trunk. Also which way is the best to face the sub, towards the seats or away from them.

Thanks again,

Zach

Any suggestions as to where I might find a good box for the 12" alpine? Was looking at a 12" box made by Visonik that was decently cheap but again not sure what a good box company would be for not too much money. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zach

If you still want sound in the back, I'd go with door speakers. You don't have to, even though almost all decks will have 4 channels.

Almost everyone will tell you to point the sub towards the opening of the trunk, but it's so subjective, just play around with it.

I don't have any suggestions as far as brand names of boxes. But keep in mind that ported boxes will give you more "boomy" output and less refined bass. A sealed box will do the opposite

If you really want to have speakers in the back you can. The doors are a much better location than the deck, especially if you do a sub. When you upgrade the front doors, unplug or remove the dash speakers. When you upgrade the rear doors, unplug or remove the deck speakers.

You can run any amount of speakers from your HU. The 'x4' just means that the HU has four channels. That's front/rear left and front/rear right. The actual number of speakers per channel (including 0) is irrelevant. For instance, I run 6 channels in my car (5.1 Surround Sound), but am using 15 speakers on those channels.

Subs always work best with the cone facing the trunk lid, but for an 'average' listener, it really doesn't matter. If you think facing it at the arm rest hole will make you feel better, there's no real harm in doing it that way. Physics be damned!

As for pre-fab boxes, none of them are really that good unless they're specifically matched to a driver. Things you want to look for are that the wall where the sub mounts is not parallel with the opposite wall. One or both should be slanted to avoid standing waves. Avoid boxes with Plexiglass walls or windows. Anything with blue lights is almost sure to be garbage. Ported or sealed is a matter of preference as they both have their place. If you want a smaller box, sealed is the way to go as sealed boxes generally require about half the internal volume of ported boxes. Most pre-fab boxes don't have tuned ports anyways, they are just holes in an over-sized sealed box. If you really wanted a good ported box it would have to be something you or a shop that knows what they are doing would build.

Ok, what I decided to do is one of my brothers friends from a while back is selling his system. He has 2 10" JL's, not sure what model but finding out tonight, and a JL 500W amp all put together in a custom box made by a car audio store near where I live. I think the subs/amp/box cost about $1200 when he got them. I also think I'm just going to replace the front door speakers and disconnect the others with those 5 1/4" Alpine SPS-500. Still debating on the Head unit. Looking at the Alpine CDA-9884 one from crutchfield since it comes with the mounting adapter, instructions, and the wiring harness. If anyones got any suggestions on another head unit that has bass controls and such it would be great.

Thanks again,

Zach
